old cues, letters bellow weights

Dug out some old spare cues today and noticed letters bellow the weights stamped into the cues , in picture from left to right C,D,A,B. Out of interest, what do the letters indicate please?, quality of wood? Only just noticed the different length splicings on the Joe Davis cues as well.
