I have another old H&O 1pc cue with the butt join. It is there since the beginning. And it is the same join like in this cue here and it is the same Hunt & Osborne is using.
But i know that there are many more out there and I had a few more with a leather pad.
The leather that surrounds the butt join is of the same density and make like on the ones without join.
Might be that the join was added later but it is still a Hunt & Osborne type.
I am confused... Oh wait... Maybe I'm not...

I have had and seen many H&O cues as well. I have seen some with a SD joint at the end (but not sure if they were there when the cue was made or was added afterwards), and the pin looks exactly liek what is shown. I have seen some with the extensions you described but I dont recall them being made of ebony. Mine were made with some other hardwoods.

The 3/4 joint definitely looks like the ones I have seen.

Regardless, the best thing to do is ask Will or Robert.

It really is none of my business but I cannot help but wonder if Jason has bothered to do that?

It is a H&O join. I'll tell you why.....I hate them

They do also seem to change their badges all the time which does not help.

        Here is a Hunt & O'byne I have here....

Put simply I don't think they thought of putting a joint in the butt of the cue. They had extensions that fit into the 3/4 socket, like an extra long butt made from some light wood, but mini butts and butt sockets are a reasonably recent invention in cue terms.

im looking at the one that dan posted....
surely the butt join was there to begin with?

im actually quite surprised. it doesnt take a genius to figure out that a cue can be extended by added via a male/female join....so why the late invention/innovation?

It was indeed. But if you saw the 2 Parris cues i put on both of them do not have a base join. These are only about 30 years old. The 1 piece uses a push on extension and the 3/4 has a huge 33" extension that goes onto the shaft. I agree....it did take some time to start adding base joins.

You'd think it wouldn't take a genius but apparently it did lol.
If you watch Frank Callans coaching series he shows you the "modern" accesories in the game including a massive (I think it was ash or something) butt that was tapered in the middle to reduce weight and try and make it the same weight as the original cue.

I was under the impression that in the old days a lot of cue makers were offering leather bumper as standard and the extensions socket was extra. Therefore, a lot of customers simply asked for a cue without it. Sometimes they would ask for the extensions that go onto the 3/4 joint so they do not get the socket inserted at the end.
I understand there are lots of fakes in Asia. I have also heard that sometimes they would rebadge a green badge as black plate, or rebadge a Robert Osbourn as a H&O or something like that. But I would imagine sending an email to the maker should sort it out once and for all.

Indeed the badge does not have a plastic cover, and yes the join has always been there.

Yeah sure. Big, ugly, bulky things. Just dont like them. They seem over kill for a cue. But hey, I do not like Hunt and O'byrne cues either.
