TBH these comments change by the year, even the month. 2 years ago all the talk was talismans, then 12 months ago it was Wooldridge tips, now its pro granite. Its a piece of leather at the end of the day and if a bog standard elk is good enough for the majority of top class professionals then I think they are good enough for your average club player.
        Thats my view anyway!

cueman your absolutely right comments do change and often vary, maybe its just down to flavor of the month.
The goal post had been set by elks and bd's but now that tips of the same quality or better are available in different brands, which are used by many of the top 16, players at all levels want to try these tips hence alot of players are moving away from elks + bd's and in some cases going by the threads its improved their game play.

Yeah I know but a lot of this really is just spiel, if someone tells you something is good and you find out a certain player uses it suddenly everyone thinks it must be and jump on the bandwagon, hence why its a different opinion by the month. In a lot of instances I've tried out these other tips and IMO they are no better really than a good quality elk, even Trevor White will tell you this.

Yes the argument maybe that these tips might play better straight away but you pay a premium for that. If you can take a day to bed in a tip, and lets face it, nobody on here is that good they need a tip that plays well immediately, then you may as well just stick to elks and save your money. I mean paying upwards of £7 for a tip is madness in anyones book. If you could suddenly play shots with one of these tips that you couldn't with an elk then I'd buy into the spiel as well but its just a load of tosh.

thats compltely true. only reason i like the granite tip is the fact that its a hard tip (purely preference) and its more consistent than looking for a good elk. which is why i pay the price. that and i use a 9.2 mm tip and i dont wanna be trimming layered tips, as it would a)weaken it causing it to delaminate and b) itd b very tall once trimmed, and i hav to sand it down heaps, which sorta defeats the purpose of having layers if im going to sand it down to 1 layer.

point: try them all, and stick to the one that gets you results. dont take anyones word for it, unless they hav a reason to justify their choice. =]

I agree in part, that you can buy a box of elks, and you will find some good ones in that box that really suit your style of play. But not everyone knows how to find such a tip (or is very consistent at doing so). Paying a bit more means you don't need to hunt through a box of elks.
I do think £7 is too much but Stu's tips are £1.50, and I don't think this is too much to pay for the convenience offered that the tip should perform as you want.

i do it same way i do an elk. sand the bottom. glue it, flip it upside down and trim it. except, the knife has to be VERY sharp. otherwise, u might stuff it up. a sharp knife cuts through it easy tho :P
and sand the top. because my tips 9.2mm, i sand a fair bit off the top the first time, so its a bit thinner. i remember reading sumwhere that a good tip height is about 1/3rd of the diameter of the tip, so abt 3mm at the highest point (middle, considering its domed). so i sand the sides down to about 1.5 to 2mm. works great
