  • Weight Experiment With Lead Tape

    I present... Robo-Cue!

James Butters cue started out at 16.25oz, which I felt was much too light. So I bought some lead tape as per Terry Davidson's suggestion. After hanging it initially above the splices and right at the end of the butt, it didn't seem that critical the exact placement of it, as the balance only changed by about an inch if I put it right on the end of the butt.
So I decided it would look neater and there would be no chance of it getting caught on your clothes as you cue if I just wound it round in two layer high strips from the joint upwards.
Hoping to play tomorrow and see how I get on with 17.2oz as I have been feeling lately my cue is a little too heavy to be honest (my usual cue is 18.5). I'll take the rest of the tape too just in case, have about quarter to half an ounce left.
Might all amount to nothing and I'll decide I chose the right weight to start with, or maybe I will kick myself, hopefully I'll know by the end of tomorrow!

P.S Sorry about the terrible picture quality only had my phone on me

      It's not BCE... It's Robo-cue

Its cheaper than having it professionally done and you can put it on a bit at a time and find what you like best.

lol true but even to touch it it can be bad i've heard, whether or not it's direct touch or whether it's touching it, not washing your hands, and then eating something which causes the problem i'm not sure but either way, i've read it can be bad

Shall I cover it in electrical tape just to make you happy
It shouldn't be a permanent thing, could have it professionally fixed in the future and a butt joint butt in.

Just a minor word of warning on the lead tape though. When you go to remove it there will be a sticky residue left on the butt of the cue. I used some teak oil (similar to linseed oil) and it came right off with no problem.

Reason I say this is it took me a little while to get round to the teak oil and I tried some different methods (scraping didn't work and could damage the finish on the butt) so I was looking for something that would take it off easily and I think very thin oil of some type is the answer.

On the lead poison thing, you need to ingest lead somehow into the body, either by eating it or else breathing the dust in. Eating it would be pretty stupid so I guess no one is going to do that and as far as I can tell there is no dust coming off the tape at all.

I've been using the lead tape on my cue for 4 months now with no problems. I also had it on an Omin cue I ordered but decided to remove it, thus the teak oil above

                    Hi all

                    A weight question:

assume you want to lighten your cue,

How much does it get lighter if you drill your joint (male) hollow. The drilling would be made with about 8mm drill and the drilling would go about 1 inch deep. Material is brass.

How much would that be in grams or in ounces

Follow up question: How much would the weight be affected if the joint end of a shaft is drilled hollow by 12mm drill and hollow part is about 4 inches long (~12cm)

Rationale of these questions is that my friend has a cue that is a bit too heavy and the balancepoint is too much in front, so the weight removed should be taken from the joint (3/4 cue) of the joint end of the cue.

                    Any mathematicians here?

Well I went down the club for 3 hours today, tried both my cue and the newly weighted. I got on much better than at the previous weight actually. Though to be honest I think I'd prefer something in between my cue and robo cue. Maybe 17.75oz
But I haven't got enough lead tape for that
But oh well we live and learn I'll know if I ever order another cue or have mine altered

Just one thing, the tape does slightly get caught on your clothes, though its not detrimental how I have it I think more than 2 layers high might have caused a problem.

Thanks Terry for the advice if I ever take it off.
