  • My Custom Uncle Thai

OK! So recently, i just recieved my uncle thai cue. The wait was approx 2 months, but thats because Uncle Thai went away for a few weeks over the holiday period (christmas, new years) which makes sense.

Ive only played pool with it, not snooker yet, and the cue has been excellent.

first note id like to make is the shaft. you can definitely tell the shaft is mature, with possibly the tightest straight grains on a cue ive seen. and the grain is dark, to the point it looks like its been printed on! not only is it stiff, with a nice springy action, it is very dry and hard. even with a bit of hand sweat, when you wipe it, there is no residue or anything. the finish on the cue is exceptional. smooth head to butt, with the only noticeable thing you can feel when closing your eyes is the joint, and the grain of the ash.

Im not going to write in depth about how it plays, as i havnt had time on a snooker table, but on a pool table, it hits wonderfully. the cue feeds back well, almost no deflection with deep side. can really feel the shot to emphasize control. i can get really good spin with it.

    Specs are as follows!:

    57.5 inches long
    9.2mm tip
3/4 cut at 14 inches up
    balanced at 17 inches up
    16.5 ounches
    28mm butt diameter.

ebony splices, maple veneer and maple front splice.

being balanced at 17 inches, with a weight of 16.5 ounces, it feels great. very good balance of being able to accelerate it for extra cue power, without losing the feel of control on the bridge.

overall im very happy with the cue. even some of the top players ive shown the cue to hav been very impressed. Ben nunan (australias number 1 pool player) was more than impressed with the quality, not believing i got it for that price, with the only negative comment being it was too light for him to play comfortably with it.

I bought 2 cue's from Unclevit, but im only going to show 1, as the other cue is my brothers. (known as knox, on the forum)

i also was given a free 6 inch minibutt, and i ordered a 18 inch Omin telescopic extension to go with it! and thankfully, the pouch and the extension match my red lining of the case

Here ill take u through details of my whole kit, cue, case, everything inside. enjoy!

ok, this first pic is of my entire kit. the case is from an old cheap eddie charlton cue i bought from my friends uncles company, who owns the eddie charlton brand rights (billiards.com.au). i modified the case by taking out the original divider, and putting in FOAM from a cheap aluminium case that fell apart on me, that i got with my MYX cue. the foam fits perfectly, and i cut out more bits of foam to divide things up, because i dont like the idea of things bumping up against each other. bit anal, but it works.

Now in detail as i remove the layers:
underneath the 4 chalks, i keep the cue cube and superglue. as u can see. cubes used for emergency scuffing (more for american pool cues but, it works well on pro granite tips as theyre very hard, just incase i dont hav sandpaper). to the side of that i keep a Razor, used for trimming tips. next to the blade is 2 spots for tips, just incase the case of pro granite tips runs out. i hav 1 pro granite left see I also keep 2 pieces of sand paper, 15 by 8 cm (approx?) under the foam, but i forgot to take them out to take photos of it. the sandpaper is wet/dry metal/wood and is 120 grit.

above that i keep my chamois cloth (thankyou unclevit for this, it works a treat on th shaft ) and my pouch! which is unneccessary, but fun. beats making my pockets blue

OK! now moving onto the actual cue. the design is how i intended. all the splices are even, the splicings are crisp and exactly how i wanted them. A+++ for that Uncle thai!

now moving onto the shaft: the front of it has a few arrows running up, but i dont care too much for it cosmetically. its how it works for me :P
the back has a few 'eyes' on it. also not fussed! very tight grain, and very well processed ash. loving the finish on it

And thats it. you guys know my tools now! hope u enjoyed looking in my case

note: will post about how it plays in depth, comparitively, when i get more time with the cue on a snooker table.

Many thanks for such a detailed description of your cue. Very nice. I have a few questions.
1)I'm no expert but would you expect to feel the grain of the Ash when running your hands down the shaft? Not sure I'd be happy with that but I use Maple so don't know. Being able to feel the joint is OK I suppose.
      2) What kind of joint did you get? Is it air-lock?
      3) Did you opt for no badge deliberatley?
Be sure and let us know how it plays.

thankyou for such a quick response i went to the toilet, came back, and got 1 new email! =D
1)well, personally, yes. i like a bit of fricktion, like, not completely smooth. you can feel there is a grain, but its not like its there enough to cause friction problems on your bridge. its a smooth shaft, with a touch of texture. on dark arroq points of the grain, you can feel the groove sort of sink in, when there is heaps of grains near the arrow ends, which is on all ash cues.
        2) airlock Omin joint. standard for all UT cues i believe.
3)yes i did, because i designed my cue and ordered it when UT didnt hav a badge yet, or he had just made one when i sent off my design. either way, i like it being sort of mysterious. ive always wanted a badgeless cue see. ever since i saw Robby Foldvari's cue. Hes an australian proffessional billiard and snooker player. i love his badgelessness.

Bob: Red mark is developed mark ? When I was working on it (Oops....Sorry.... not me but UT ) I did not see it. I playtested the shaft for a 6-red frame, and it is solid, with 'life' in the feel hitting the cueball. Enjoy
          It's in the Shaft

Congratulation Bob. Your cue specs almost the same like mine (28mm BUTT /57" LENGTH /9.25mm TIP). But for the weight yours is too light (16.5oz) tbh.

Anyway, thanks for posting your cue details here. UT works will not disappointing me for sure.
            My cueing sucks

              BoBnoGG!n,

Great looking cue, happy for ya

Don't worry abt the 16.5oz part. I've seen a few friends making fantastic breaks with that kinda weight cue.

No the Red mark looks like its a natural part of the wood! i dont mind :P like i said, it adds personality oh the shaft is very responsive, you can feel every shot very well! its one of the best shafts ive ever played with, along side some parris cues ive tried (friends). id reccomend UT cues to EVERYONE. your doing the world big favors Unclevit.

hehe it couldnt possibly be dissapointing, not for the price you pay
i cant play with a heavy snooker cue. my brothers cue (18 ounce) i couldnt play with. thats his old cue. my old cue is 16 3/8 ounces, so i am very use to playing with it. one time i got 1metre of backspin on a ball other end of the table, from behind the bulk line, so i know cue power shouldnt be too much of a problem if i work on it

Cues in the past were often very light, were they not? ill admit, it feels a touch heavier than my old cue, because its very forward weighted but it feels good. because my old cue sometimes felt floaty on my bridge, especially if i had to hold it like, closer to the joint. and arent a lot of really old cues really light? if people 40+ yrs ago could knock in centuries with 15ounce cues, surely 16.5 isnt too light :P
i think its just a standard thats changed these days. hehe

I guess thte only thing you can't ask Ut for in a cue is the exact number of evenly spaced arrows but the ash used by UT is unique in that the grain is very dark and grainy. U can actually feel the grain when running your hand over it but it does not stick to you hand when cueing. Will be getting another Ut cue in addition to the two I already have. This time a one piece

Oh yeh, thats whats so wierd, yet, great about it. ive played with parris cues where the grain is very raised, but not that dark. good wood used, but it gets caught on hairs under my chin sometimes when cueing. i ddint like that. but i can rub my chin up and down this shaft NO PROBLEM of anything getting caught. haha i love how dark the grain is. ooooh a 1 piece, sounds awesome id love to get a 1 piece one day.. maybe when i get some more spending money =]

I also played with a Parris for 5 years but since getting the UT cues I got rid of it. Just could not compare to the UT quite frankly. Best cue I ever played with bar a trevor white cue which was an excellent cue in a different way. When I 1st ordered through unclevit I did not know what to expect as no one then seemed to have taken him up on the offer he posted here. I have since had the pleasure of meeting him when I last visted thailand and I collected the cues from him. I never expected such good work for the price quoted and I also tried Omin cues whilst I was in thailand I I must say that the Ut cues would rank in my opinion better than the Omins that I played with whilst at Omins factory. here is an example of the grain in my cue

Yeh, its a bit 50/50 ordering from a man, with no real reputation, and can only hope for the best. yeh ive played with a few omins here, and, its not as well made IMO

your cues r very sexy. if i must say so myself haha yeh, looks very similar the color of the wood, and darkness of the grain. i dont think people can understand by just looking, they have to see and feel an uncle thai cue to really get an idea wat were talking about. =]
