First of all, do you change your own tip?

If so, I would say spend some time and try most of the tips mentioned above because everyone has different preference, and you don't know what you like until you give them a try.

And one other factor would be how many hrs do you play per day/week? If you play 2-3hrs/day, you'd want something that is more durable and can keep the shape, like talisman, mw supertip, moori, kamui, o'min, etc... beware though, some of them are pretty "hard" tips even though they say they're soft.

and one last thing, make sure you could tell the differences among difference brands; I once let my gf try talisman(medium), elk, and kamui at the same time to decide which brand she likes to put on her cue, and she couldn't tell the difference...

I may be in a minority on here, not sure, but I swear by Elkmasters. I know some have stated that they're inconsistent, one good one, one bad one etc and this complaint is not confined to here. In the early days of playing pool and snooker I used to like Blue Diamonds. 007 put me onto Elks prob. some 15 years ago now and I've not gone back since.

My rule of thumb is, if you like a hard contact on the shot, go for an Elk, soft contact go for Blue Diamond. BD's feel too sloppy to me now, so will never go back to using them.

I've not found Elks to be inconsistent, although I do have friends that make that complaint. My new Elk has been on approx 3 weeks and I've had breaks of 62, 49, 44, 42, 41 and a host of 30's with it. Also won 2 out of 3 league games with it. So am more than happy...

My pool cue always has an Elk, but I hardly ever re-tip it (owned the cue for around 17 years, probably only re-tipped it 3 times in all that time as it dont seem to wear down no matter how much i play!).

Cant comment on the new expensive tips. Don't believe they are a panacea, but am willing to accept I could be wrong!
