  • Best Cue Maker?

As a recent newcomer to this forum, I have been reading the threads about Cue Makers, learnt a lot about Wooldridge, White, BarrWat, etc., with much interest, but I want to ask about a comment I read on a posting here mentioning Parris cues and a "quality issue".
What is the issue and has it been resolved?
I have been playing for many years with the same cue for 20+ years and I am thinking about a new cue. Sorry but I don't know the maker of my cue, I bought it in a club that closed down many years ago.
My cue has alway been a 1/2 cue and originally came with a wood screw at the join (yep, it is that old ). This join started to crack (9 years ago) and after some searching I sent my cue to John Parris and the wood screw was replaced with a brass joint. The cue came back like new and I have ever since looked after it, cleaning and re-oiling once or twice a year.
Then after a few years the shaft cracked, I obviously sent it to John Parris for a rescue-job which came back fixed and invisible and so far (touch-wood) is still perfect and I don't even think about it anymore (until I started writing this posting).
So obviously when I read that comment, it did make me wonder.
Can anyone shine any light on the comment, or just general comments about makers.
I am so glad I have found this website, very informative and enlightening.
    All the best

    Hi

    Who is the best cuemaker???

The answer to this is there is no answer, all the top makers can make cues just as good as each, the difference is that some of them are more consistent with the quality thet produce than others.

This is why some people make some negative comments about Parris cues, there is no doubt that Parris make exeptional cues but they do let quite a few lesser quality cues leave the work shop.

Speaking from personal experience I have seen several bad examples of Parris cues but I have never seen a bad example of a Wooldridge, White,Robin Cook or Dave Coutts cue.
Just because its old, doesn't mean its worth a fortune!!

Is more or less your own choice.. There are a lot cue makers out there and price from low to high.
Depends on your spec and design and budget. If it's possible you should try out more cues before making your choice.
Maybe you can get another JP ??

      cheers

Dean, I am like you, I have always been a JP fan and then started reading stuff on here and it confused me, I was considering changing...
Then I realised, why should I care what other people think? I am happy with the work and the service I have always received, and I am close enough to him to go back anytime if there is a problem.
I decided to stay loyal, and placed my order for my cue yesterday.
          Highest Match Break - 77
          Highest Practice Break - 101, 106, 111
          Highest Breaks of 2010 - 76-65-62-61-60-60-59-57

Thats all that matters , I wouldnt care if Ronnie O,sullivan rubished my cue , as long as I was happy with it thats all that counts .

Like everything else if youre happy with a certain brand or make , then you,ll obviously go back there until otherwise .

I asked John about Ronnie while I was there yesterday.
He has made him over 10 more cues since he got the H&O and JP even said to me that some of them were absolutely amazing cues. Ronnie would use them for a day or so and then complain that there is a certain shot where it didnt feel right, even if it felt great on every other shot lol.
Im sure im not the only person who thinks that alot of Ronnies cue swapping is psychological, and i dont think he will ever find the cue he wants to replace the one he smashed n loved.
Moral of the story, ROS or not, dont smash the cue you love!!

To every player, it is never about the cue but it is solely on the cue maker whom you have trusted.

If all the cue makers were to build ROS a plain ebony butt cue without badge, who do you think he will choose? Have anyone ever wonder?

As for me, John Parris have always been the NO.1 cue maker who has a place way above any other. I dun care about what the M8 here has about his cue but knowing that you have a JP cue in hand has already increase my confidence in the game. Although i am currently playing with a UncleThai Maple cue but i hope to get a JP Paragon or Ultimate soon to replace my current cue.

I have had the chance & honour to own and played with several big names like JP, TW, H&O, RC but each cue has their own strong character and weakness. Some may prefer the stiffness of H&O, the prefect finish of TW or even the surprise work of JP and etc. In the end, it is what you want in your heart not what the cue makers has in store for you.

Its true that you must find a cue that suits yourself and feels right for every shot you take at the table, its about the techniques you use when you cue the ball. Buying a cue exactly like big stars does not exactly make you cue just as good as them. Find a cue that suits you, stick with it, learn with it, treat it like you would treat your missus and it should last you a life time.

Btw, which cue was it that he smashed lol.

                    Regards,
                    Thien.

i think thats the key..learn with/about your cue, they all play differently(the throw wwhen playing with side being particulary different),as long as your cue is of decent quality you will be fine.i have changed cues quite a few times about 3/4/5 years ago, sometimes because i didnt like the cue but sometimes as a motivtion thing to try to re-enthuse me about snooker&practice.

I think it was an old JP cue that he smashed a few years back.
He had it for ages and didnt change, but we all know what Ronnie is like. Biting tips off and giving cues away etc.
Ever since he smashed that cue he has been trying to replace it with the same thing

I think that if you like a cue then it doesn't really matter who makes it or what it is made from. Look at the cue Stephen Hendry used for about 20 years, it was a basic maple cue from the shop at the club he played at as a teenager and it only cost around £70.
We all want to find out that 'special' cue (myself included) but it is usually down to practice with what you have as long as it is of decent quality.

                            Hi mate

I have a few cues in my collection and seen alot Of different cue brands in the club.
In my opinion there are no better cue maker than john parris.
Of course You have to choose the Ultimate cue , it does take around 6 month to make butt it will be the best what you can get. I have this cue and you and this is the best cue I have, cannot get better one.
Remember that some other Cuemaker get them cues from china or thiland and I have seen this cues and been told what is the difference.
You cannot go wrong if you choose parris Ultimate cue and it always go up in value.
                            Regards

                              You are the decide of who is the best cue maker;

There will never be "the best cue maker" in my opinion, you play with the cue that feels right to from touch to shots to anything you feel will help your game aand make you a better player, regarless of the make, model or price of the cue.
                              "Where's the white going?"
