  • Northwest Cues

Hi Guys, I have just been to "North West Cues", Which is in Freckleton, Preston,
I went with a mate who is having a cue made for him,
Thought i would go and have a look,
Anyway ive got to say I saw a lot of the cues he made from scratch and I was impressed with waht he showed me,
He sorted my mate out a custom cue for £250, which will be ready in 6-7 weeks.

and while we were talking to him I think his name was Kevin,
he told me he has made the last 2 cues for john higgins, and the one he is using now he has changed the size of it a few times.
So if thats tru he cant be bad at all..... ( if its true )

Have any of you had cues off him before and if so what do you think of them.

Hi and welcome to the forum mate , yes Higging is using a Northwest cue . If you familiarise yourself with the site and look in the cue section you will see reviews on their cues . His name is Kevin Muncaster .

From what i,ve read they are top class , and up there with the best .

What design are you having on your cue mate:snooker::snooker:

I have one of his cues for 2 years now. can assure you it's one of the best cues I have ever used (and I have used most of top cue makers cues). and yes Kev is a top bloke. just ordered 2 more cues off him for 2 friends of mine who tried my cue.

          Hmmmm
          Depends what you're after.
I've never liked his splicing and I know some people who've had negative experiences with Kev including myself. Having said that he's a nice enough bloke, his prices are reasonable and lots of people are happy with his work.

What did,nt you like about the splicing Watford , was it the quality of wood , the attention to detail etc ?

Crazy Cabbie is probably scratching his head now wonding what to do . It would be nice if other members who have owned one to give their opinion . I,ve only read good things about his cues , but that,s not as good as coming straight from the horses mouth , hence the question .

Even with the top cuemakers , you may find find that certain asecpts of their cues like taper , feel etc ,wont be for everyones liking , but the quality of the splicing , attention to detail is very much alike in terms of quality , and as good as it gets .

I've seen some with very uneven splices and he mostly uses that red glue so you get a red smudge around the splice.

A like an even splice and I hate that red glue.

At the end of the day though its only cosmetics. I understand that people want perfection when they part with their money but I find that proper players don't really care too much about little things like an uneven splice or dodgy glue lines, or even perfect straight grain, if the cue plays well who can really complain?

About 7 years ago I started playing snooker again after a gap of 12 years without picking up a cue. I ordered a John Parris 'ultimate' cue and knew that I would have to wait about 4 months for it so I went onto ebay and bought a maple 'Northwest' cue. It arrived and the maple was horrible, the splicing was uneven but..........it was a great playing cue!! I played with it the entire season and won the 'Over 50s' singles and reached the final of the area singles with that cue. Finally at the end of the season, my parris ultimate arrived and I sold my Northwest cue on ebay for about £40 and have regretted it ever since!! I must have had over 100 cues since selling that cue and have never played as good with any cue since!!

So, for what its worth, my opinion is that Kev Muncaster (Northwest Cues)makes a damn good playing cue!!

I like this...very honest and in a way funny.

Do you find that he likes to use a slightly thicker taper than other cue makers?

Interesting this, i'd agree about the cosmetics although i've had one North West that was a cracker in every respect but there all good value for money.

Like Oldgit, i've found the ones i've had to be great playing cues & as much as i appreciate a cue made to perfection..........i'd rather have a great playing cue.

Although that said if you can find a cue that is both made to perfection & a great player its always nice.......lol
