  • why maple for american pool cues?

it has been said that, generally, the characteristics of maple and ash is the same, and the difference in feel is negligible .
mike's site did point out the maple is a tinge harder.

if snooker cues can be made with both ash and maple, then why most CNC produced american pool cues are made with maple?

thats the thing. go to stamford cue makers, robin cook website and a few others

they do say "north american ash".... so its unlikely to be an issue about supply and shortage. so yea, im curious

I have ash cue for pool and it is great
You cannot improve your game if you don't have a cue and snooker table

Maple looks far better. Ash is ugly.

Stands to reason why Maple is used more in America and especially Canada. Pretty big industry, and what a tree Maple is, how many trees produce syrup like that ? It just seems like the perfect timber for pool cues aswell, has a much tighter grain, so smoother, and this is especially important for American pool because of the loop bridge. Very difficult to cue like they do unless your cue is super smooth

although i do not own a maple cue, i do think it feels naturally smoother. would it be partly due to the finish than nature of the wood itself?
about the loop bridge, would that have to do with the taper more?

                      just curious thats all.

Not really the taper, they all seem to be even tapered over the bridging area. Just when you cue with your finger completely round the shaft it has to be as smooth as poss cause theres more friction than with the open snooker style bridge

If you want smooth try a pear shaft... mine glides better than any cue i've ever tried before and i've tried a few trevor white maple cues...
