I suppose I have always only looked at British made cues and not realy looked at the Chinese cues I have owned a Master cue in the past but I know play with a Tony Glover.

Master cue is thai cue not Chinese cue I'm afraid. I don't realize your interest in cues is so limited but I can assure you Chinese cues could be expensive and be very good.

Which cheap english cues are you talking about? I'm pretty sure BCE, MBS etc. are all made in China. The made in China sticker on mine gave it away

                      Hi Guys,

My first post on this forum. I bought a full size table from Jian Yang and I must say that it is brilliant and very high quality, although my knowledge of snooker equipment is very limited.

I also got a few of the SC range snooker cues and they play perfect for me. Most are 10mm tips but i have one 9mm tip that I use and it is a nice weight for me, heavy but not to heavy.

I'm still only a 36 breaker so you can guess how much I know about the sport but I really do like the Jian Yang cue. Then again, I haven't had the pleasure of testing many other cues.

The problem with Jian Ying cues are not the quality - they are great cues! The real problem is the stigma of "made in China" has on anything manufactured there. For many like Jian Ying it's unjustified but even if they made a "$1000 cue", they would never sell for $1000. Case in point, several years ago, a group of people were given a tour of a bone china manufacturing plant in China when one of the people on the tour (a reporter) broke off from the rest and walked into a room where they were labeling the plates, bowls, etc. with "Made in England". Turns out that the British company found they could have their bone china manufactured in China at a fraction of the cost but at the same standards and quality of the same products made in England. Nobody noticed the difference for years! Although this became a big scandal at the time, it pointed to the fact that, "Made in England" had become an expensive "brand" and that as long as standards were set the same as in English factories, there really was no difference in quality. Jian Ying has gone through great lengths to remove the stigma of "made in China" by instituting ISO9000 standards, and even removing "made in China" from the product. (The cues actually say "made in JY Billiards"). A couple of weeks ago I decided to take a chance and buy one of their cues and was actually amazed by the quality of the cue, the extensions and even the case. The cue was made from Canadian Ash and was smooth as silk, had perfect weight and greater control than other cues I've used in the past. However, since the "Chinese" brand is not yet associated with top quality, Jian Ying will always have a battle making it to the top (unless they move to England!).

I find it absolutely amazing that not even the Chinese themselves support their own resident cuemakers anywhere near how they support (with cash) British cuemakers. I saw a Will Hunt Black Plate in mint condition and a very low number (39 maybe) and the asking price was 17,000 Yuan or $2,714(CAN) or around 1,700GBP.

I also had a comment from a Chinese cue buyer who said his AGENTS were having a hard time finding Black Plate cues. So now the rabid collectors are hiring agents to broker Will Hunt and Robert Osborne Black Plates and now we have the seller asking a high price and then the 'agent' marking it up another 25% or so for his profit. No wonder the price is through the roof.

I've also heard Kevin DeRoo from Vancouver, Canada sells a lot into the Chinese market (Marco Fu uses one of his cues) and I know his price for a very basic 3/4-butt with plain ebony butt and extensions is well over $1,000(CAN) and that's purely because he is able to easily get that kind of money from Chinese buyers. It might just be that collectively they are their own worst enemy when in comes to speculating in the cue market

these cues look really great for the low price :s (with case and extension)

Is it a bargain or something catchy about it?

                              Chu:

Now you've made me really CRANKY. I think for 69GBP that is a really good cue for that money if the one you get looks anything like the picture.

But, DAMMIT! They won't ship to the Americas as I was going to buy one as soon as I saw the listing. How can you lose at that price?

I do not understand this, could someone please help me out?

What does ISO rating have anything to do with the quality of a handmade cue?
