whats the diff between the maple and ash besides look?

i know that maple would of been a better choice for me having stubble that catches on the ash every so often...which is why i want to try one but my dad is the same, he has a really old cue that he actually found and restored it about 30 years ago, but if im honest its a 7mm tip and hes getting on a bit now i think something with a bigger tip woulde be better as he seems to keep mis-hitting balls now, when he plays with a club cue of around 9mm tip he fires them in from all over the shop but as soon as he plays with his he miscues or puts unwanted side on which i guess is easy to do when the tip is so small...

I think its just a personal thing some like ash some like maple . Both can be stiff or whippy so i dont think there is much difference in how they play as a rule .

Yes small tips can be difficult to play with if your not striking the ball well as you can impart unwanted side easier . .
