  • Cue Advice - Beginner

    Alright lads and lasses?

Just found this Forum and thought I'd post here, hopefully this is in the correct section and you would be kind enough to give me some advice.

Anyway, I'm a beginner to the game of Snooker, having dabbled in it a small bit a few years ago, but have now decided to play it more with my Brother.

I'm just wondering about a cue for a beginner such as myself. I'll be honest, I don't have much to spend on one, and it would be used maybe twice a week for a couple of hours at a time.

I have spotted this one on the Argos website, and for the price, €33.99, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts and opinions on it:

Unfortunately, Argos is the only store in my area that sells them, and the price of the above cue would be around the price that I can afford, not much I know, but hopefully sufficient for a recreational player such as myself.

    Thanks

You can have Ronnie's/Selby's/Higgin's/Williams or the best Parris cue going,it dont mean shîte if you cant pot for shîte

Btw funnily enough I play with one of them myself, slight variation of Doherty's,the centre joint gets a little loose now and then which is slightly disconcerting,I'll upgrade when I can be asked.

In the beginning, almost any cue can be playable if it's the right length, weight feels good, 10-11" ferrule, and is mostly straight. A good tip is actually more important.

I'm sure many here will disagree with me though.

If you buy that cue, you'll be back here in short order asking how to get the varnish off the shaft. I'm not trying to get you to spend more than your budget, but if you do buy it you'll end up buying another cue to replace it. I have a Riley and I no longer use it because of the varnished shaft, so my advice is to save a bit more money and get something better because you'll end up spending more anyway.

Thanks for the advice lads, much appreciated.

If I was to save up more money and get a different cue, would any of you be able to suggest something, and how much more than €35 would we be talking?

Actually, just looking through Argos' Snooker Cues again, and they have a Ronnie O'Sullivan BCE one, would that be any better, for €50?

If your serios about the game and inted to play regular and want to improve then a decent handmade cue will cost you £130-160 . The ones within that price range with good reviews are craftsman , mastercraft , mastercraft , mastercue , mw shark , omin , ut .

Dont buy one of those from argos , their ok if your only going to plays occassionally but are cheap mass produced cues .

firstly forget about argos - they are all bad! - ask if there are any old ones lying about in your local club.

Here's a page of Canadian-made, machine-spliced cues that range between £31 (for a two-piece) and £59 (for a 3/4 with extension). No idea what the shipping would be to the Ireland, but the cues do start within your opening price range.

Seriously lads, thanks a lot for the advice and links to pages with cues on etc, it's really helpful

I was in town earlier and just got that Ronnie O'Sullivan BCE cue I linked to earlier to use for a couple of months and I'm going to ask for one of those handmade cues that people here have linked to for my Birthday which is in a couple of months.

That way I have an ok cue to practise with before I get the decent one in a couple of months.
