  • Robin Scott cue new, sticking

Hi i'm a total beginner just got into snooker and loving it and bought one of these cues from ebay, very nice for the price and very straight, will look to get a better cue in due time.

Only problem i have is that the cue is becoming sticky very early into practice, can anyone tell me what the finish is on these cues as ive read i may to coat in linseed oil or similar?

    Welcome to TSF stiltsky.
You need to find out whether your cue has a varnished finish. If it has you will need to take that varnish off and then oil could be applied. There would be no point putting oil on top of the varnish.
Alternatively you could see if wiping the cue with a damp cloth helps.

Thanks. I know other people who have these cues from ebay because theres a thread about them (cheap chinese apparently) so if anyone with one could let me know. Just read some advice from Mike Wooldridge that cheaper cues are pretty much pointless coating in oil so think il just remember to take a damp and dry cloth next time i practice.

What exact cloths do people generally use for cleaning and buffing?

People mostly use a bar towel or cue towel for the damp one and/or any dry duster type cloth for the polishing.

Take a sand paper and sand your shaft.Do not be rough, since you only need to take off the varnish.after you sand the shaft , and the varnish is off tale some bee wax and apply it to your shaft.Hopefully it will become smooth as silk.

I used a VERY fine emery cloth to clean varnish off a cue. The emery cloth or sand papaer will get clogged up before the varnish is removed. Just keep going but don't scratch the wood with coarser stuff.

Yeah if the cue is becoming sticky easily it's been varnished.

The Robin Scott i bought wasnt varnished, it had a bare wood feel to the shaft. Slightly rough feel, a few wipes down with some very fine wire wool 0000, and a few thin coats of linseed leaving each coat 12 hours to dry and its super smooth and nice to play, just give it a wipe down with my microfibre cloth after every time i play with it.

This is the advise I would take. Make sure is raw linseed oil and as white/pure as possible. Any linth free cloth is good enough. :snooker:
Make sure you wipe it after everytime you played.

Browse through some old threads too.. you can get some good advise from there.

                  Cheers
