  • Ebony butt losing its shine

    Hi

My peradon cue is a bit dull on the ebony butt and also has a few marks, what is the best product to buff it to a nice shine? I know linseed for shafts but butts are less talked about.

    Cheers

Surprised you aint seen a big difference, try leaving it on for 5 minutes before you buff it off, i have used it on the shaft as well on some cues to good effect, BUT probably not a good idea if you plan on using linseed oil in the future, as the wax will seal the wood stopping the oil from working, so you will probably need to remove wax before oiling.

I'll try leaving it 5 mins as per your suggestion and instructions on the tin!

I might give it a go on the shaft as not bothered about oiling it in the future, does it go sticky though?

Well just done the whole cue and the ebony has come up a bit better, although I think many years of wear means it will never have a real glossy finish on the butt.

You could try posting a pic up, & maybe the cue makers will advise better solutions

The problem with peradon cues is they use a varnish finish on their cues, so anything you put on top of that will have no effect. You will need to take all the varnish off and then apply oil several times, buffing between coats to build up a shine. You could also use a beeswax after this to enhance the shine and provide a deeper patina.

yeah the wear is just where the varnish has worn off I think.

Thanks for the info, I'm going to leave it and just play with the thing!

You could try using some flour paper... very gently rub the surface until smooth, then use linseed oil, leave for a few hours, buff, repeat...

After a day or so when the wood cannot take anymore oil, use the wax and buff to a shine... ( I prefer to just use the linseed oil ).

                        Just my 2 cents...

                        Good luck
