  • Wire Wool 0000/Ultra Fine Sandpaper

Is there a downside to rubbing your cue down with wire wool or a 3000 grit sandpaper? My new Craftsman Cue is proving to be a bit sticky and I find I have to keep cleaning it to keep it silky smooth. I've read all the threads about cleaning and rubbing down cues and there's lots of good tips. ADR147's £20 note works very well as does a brown paper bag and the inside of a cornflakes packet. Bottom line is the wire wool 0000 works as good as anything.
Question is.... does frequent use ( I'm talking twice a week) of wire wool or fine grade sandpaper damage your cue in the long term???

The problem with wire wool regardless of grade is, it will conform to whatever shape it is rubbed against. meaning, it will rub out all the grain filler that is used to darken and fill the grain.
Instead, use some very fine wet and dry paper and take care to sand cue down. Doing this will keep the grain as it is, and will remove only the finish that is sticky.
I am sure Craftsman use shellac sanding sealer to finish their cues and this is what is becoming sticky.
