  • Rusting ferrule. What to do?

the ferrule of my cue turned into very dark brown, and seemed to have some slight orange rust around some areas.

    why has this happened?
would wool wire be the solution to go?
    alternative solutions?

    thanks all.

All brass will tarnish through time. If it requires a very good clean, then 0000 wire wool would do the trick.

A new currency note will also do the trick and also not scratch the wood near the bottom of the ferrule.

Since your country is the UN I couldn't recommend a British 5 pound note but any currency printed on the normal linen paper (all of them are) will work a treat.

Also, 1000-grit emery paper will do the trick too

many thanks for the note suggestion terry.

i gave it a go, with several currencies in fact . it didnt work as well as i'd hoped.
the surface is definitely smoother, as it is without the rusty surface. but the color is still darker than the espresso i had this morning

i play with my cue having the feeling that my cue somehow lost some of its mojo....

just think of it as character !!!... after all it is just only the ferrule which can be easily replaced

I use wire wool that is not too severe and it seems to do the trick, don't let it touch the wood and just twist it around the ferrule is what I do.

I think some wax and/or auto polishing (in reverse order)should do the trick. Just tape the area below the ferrule as sometime the dark residue will discolour the wood if you are not careful.
