  • Cue making course

Further to my post about a new butt, does anyone know of a cue making course? Its big business in the world of guitars where people have a weeks holiday and come away with a custom built guitar under the guidance of an experienced luthier.

I'd have a crack at making my own, I'm sure others would.

A quick google reveals nothing out there like this

Plenty of people on the forum have. Look out for Poolqjunkie, Flame and myself. We all started messing about with a bit of ash and ebony at some point. Search the threads and you may see an insight into having a go.

Thanks I realise all makers start off slowly, thats why a course would be great to give people a good grounding.

I'll have a search though to see how others started off

well I'm not sure about the other cuemakers, but I believe Mike Wooldridge started off as a wannabe roxk/pop star but didn't make it ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbIQb1Jkh5I

        hee-hee!

it's a good question though Steve ... if there aren't any specific cue-making courses, maybe you could enroll on an evening woodworking course at your local adult learning centre and tell the teach you want to make a cue ...

Ok this is not directly towards the more traditional handspliced cues we know and love, but more US pool cues. But all the same a few bits and pieces that are relavent are there and every little helps.

don't want to disillusion anybody or put anyone off, cue making isn't like oh i think i'll try driving an hgv or i would fancy an office job,you really do need to have a certain mental level and approach to succeed, not forgetting a certain level of skill.i have worked as a carpenter and joiner since 1967,only in the last 2 years have i dabbled in cue making,i can honestly say it is far and away more difficult(and rewarding) than i imagined, even with my knowledge of timber and ability with tools,i have struggled and learned, please do not be put off by my post,it is not beyond anybody to make a snooker cue,but it is in my opinion beyond the majority of people, lastly if you never try you will never do it.

As UT is planning to 'retire' next year, I am trying to 'convince' him to set up a private cuemaking courses here in Thailand. Learn-by-doing, sort of. I will post the good news here once he agrees. Or perhaps a two-day workshop on how a cue is built, woods selection & understanding, balancing techniques, etc. But not that soon

I could see myself doing something like that too. How much do you think the right price might be?

Every cue maker needs an Apprentice...... Pick me, Pick me.
