  • About a cue with a thin butt

What is the thinnest butt you have ever played with which you deem comfortable?

Do you feel that a butt that is too thin would make the cue feel less "powerful" or 'solid"?

    Thank you.

My previous cue had a 27.5mm butt, and was comfortable. Current cue is 29.5, adapted quite well too.

In fact, I feel a thinner butt gives me a better grip, so I'm trying for a 29mm for my coming cue.

How thin is too thin, that I'm not too sure.

i have tried loads of different sizes over the years. i use a 30mm butt tried a 29mm 29.5mm 31mm and it just doesnt feel right i know its only .5/1mm either side but i can tell immediately between them dont like thin butts dont like thin cues full stop.

I LIKE BIG BUTTS AND I CANNOT LIE YOU OTHER BROTHERS CANT DENY!!!

          29.5 mine is ^

My pool cue feels smaller than my snooker cue, but just relax ya back hand and you should feel comfortable with anything that is roughly the same

The thinnest i had must be the old JP special at 27.5mm.
The feeling is good but the length is a tad too short for me at 56".
If the cue is 56.5-57", it will be just nice.
I doubt it is the thickness of the butt that determine the cue power or stiffness.

              pqj:

Alain Robidoux uses a very thin butt on his cue and I believe it's at 26mm which is a little too thin for me, but he prefers it. Doesn't seem to hinder his ability to play and I don't believe he has small hands either.

I often wondered why female players, with their smaller hands haven't tried to go to a really slim butt, in the 26mm range.

But then again, I've never talked to any really good women snooker players so maybe they do go for the smaller butt already

I remember Mike Halletts' cue in the early 80's had a very thin butt also (not sure what size) but very thin.

I find slimmer butts rest in the hand more loosely and when under stress help reduce the involuntary tendency to SNATCH!!

Adding a hopefully helpful size-as reference...

                      If one were to make a 58" length / 27mm butt / 17" balance / 9.5 mm tip / ash shaft /
could a butt of ebony or cocobolo or rosewood bring it up to 19 oz?
Appearances aside, would there be a best choice for stiffness and best hit?

                      Cheers.

                        I think so.

I do not think ebony/cocobolo/rosewood would make too much difference, perhaps the weight of the shaft would matter more, in my humble opinion.

For myself, 17" forward balance with a thin butt is easier to make than a back balanced cue with the same thin butt because i dont add any lead.

Some people believe a small hand should go with a smaller butt...what do you think determine the butt size of a player's choice?
I tend to think whether the player holds the cue more in the fingers or inside the palm also matters a lot.
                          Any comment, please?

i think it purely comes down to grip. i know of guys with small hands who prefer big cue butts, cause they dont like being able to grip their fingers around the cue and have their fingers n thumb touch, on the other hands, i know guys with relatively big hands (bigger than mine.. i have small hands. and small other things.... ) who like my cue because they can just wrap their fingers around my butt, and have it 'feel agile'.

                              My experience:

                              - when gripping the cue most with the forefinger, a bigger diameter is better

                              - when gripping the cue most with the 3 back fingers (like Steve Davis suggest, or Alex Higgins´s grip), a thinner diameter is better
mind control > body control > cue control > ball control
