Got my new Cue from Paul @ Welsh Pool Trading. The tip is quite rough. As this is my first "proper" cue, do I need to sand the tip down, or just chalk it up. Sorry for the newbie question.

Tom. Do you know what type of tip it is? Any chance of posting a photo? Personnally I like a nice domed shape and always sand my tips down a lot before playing. I like the chalk to stick nicely to the tip. Some folks (Peter Ebdon) like a nice mushroom shape with edges hanging over the ferrule. I think if you try a few screw backs you'll soon know if the tip is ok.
PS Good choice of cue. Wish I'd bought one whilst Paul was still making them.

Yeah Tom looks a bit rough. Don't like all those ragged bits but easily sorted. Must be somebody at your club could take a look and decide wether to file it down or just replace it. Nice domed shape that hold the chalk would be my preference. Here's a not very good picture of one of my cue tips.Attached Files

So you bought the cue from Paul eh, good cues, (and he gave you a good deal by looking at the price you paid) the one i have is a one piece and would be absolutely perfect if it were just 1/2" longer (my playing partner only ever uses this cue - must start charging him lol ) Pretty sure it will be an elk tip on it, as that what mine looks like. Play with it for an hour and you will soon see a change to the tip, good luck

That tip looks like a blue diamond or elkmaster and by the looks of it has been roughed up the wrong way . The tip looks very spongy and soft and will take a fair amount of playing in before you can feel some firmness .
It will take a few hours to play in , and i would turn the cue around every few shots to trey and get it even . I wouldnt use sandpaper as the fibres seem tro loose as it is . Just knock it in with the balls .

It was indeed. Well got a few frames in last night with it. First impression, my word what a cueCouldn't believe what a difference from me cheap Cannon (budget peradon) this makes, glides so well. Even my mate with his Riley which was alot better than my canon said he didn't want to play with his cue anymore.
Hit some lovely long shots from the word go, although my game wnt down hill in the 2nd and 3rd frame.
Roughness seems to be disapearing and conatct with cue ball seems good. Going for some solo practice over the weekend as playing partner is in Vegas.
Suprising with the weight of the cuye, 19 1/4 oz, the balance point doesn't make it feel heavy at all (canon was 17oz)

PS Just off to listen to the news on the "wireless".
