  • Very old Billiard mace butted cue now on ebay

I have listed the last of my Garage clear out of cues .
Having sold most of them to a collector in birmingham two weeks ago , the remainder are now listed on ebay .

One that I will point out as collectable quality is the Geroge Wright Billiard butted cue with leather pad for mace shots inserted in butt .
I was going to hang onto this as George Wright is my favorite billiard table Manufacturer , so kept it back from the Birmingham cue buyer .

I do not know the age of this cue , but would say it exceeds 120 years of age Easy , and is prob an early example of George Wrights Manufacture of cue making .
This cue is the transition of a Mace which was nothing more than a stick with a lump of wood on the end .
The flat name plate splice was first used in this design so that the cue did not roll around when taking a Push shot .
The cue became known in its modern format by someone sticking a tip of leather on the end of the stick holding the mace head and useing it like a modern cue .
When this cue was made it was still in the rules that you could shove the cue ball with the reverse end of the cue , this being the leather padded Butt end .
as we know the Rules changed when it became clear that ball control was greater in accuracy useing the leather tip method rather than shoving like a mace . so the design was dropped around 1880ish could have been earlier 1860s ?, and the modern cue evolved from there .
shoving or push shotting is now not allowed ....lol

that is also why modern cue's have the flat face on them , not for a name plate but it is the remnants in design for the mace push shot cue .
I used to be told many years ago from the old billiard fitter at our place that the flat edge was for women in victorian times , when taking a shot it would be impossible for them to cue leaning over the table , as those low busted Victorian Dinner dresses would reveal all there glory for the Male players to look at , so they push shotted standing upright .
Believe what you will , but it makes sense
