  • New cue advice.

Hi all. I posted a while ago asking for some advice on cues, Back then I had a budget of around £250, but I managed to pick up a 2nd hand John Parris Champion. Its a great cue, had the tip size reduced to 9mm and the butt smoothed down so the wood wasn't true of the brass joint. Really like the cue but it is slightly warped from a previous owner, the guy who done the small jobs on my cue attempted to straighten it but theres not allot of difference. Its warped in a slightly odd way in that I don't think it would be possible to fix.

Anyway.. certain circumstances have changed (single again ) and now I am willing to pay a whole lot more for a brand new cue. I want somthing really special that I hope will last me a life time. I have looked at Mike Wooldridge cue's and I am getting a quote for around £900. I said I will pay alot for a cue, but if I can get just as good of a cue from any other cuemaker and save money then I will of course do that.

Specs for me are pretty standard as I haven't tried anything different. I am used to playing with my JP Champion at the moment, but, I should realy try some other specs out to see if i get a better feel.

Any advice would be apreciated. What I sell the JP champion cue for can hopefully be put towards an extra shaft for my new cue, One for snooker and one for English pool.

I understand that I would probably have to wait quite a while for such a good qauality cue and I don't mind. Do most cue-makers take a deposit and then take the rest of the money when the cue is ready?

Hope someone can help me in the search for something special.

    Thanks

    Paul

If I won the lottery Trevor White would be my choice. £900 for a MW is just not good value for money IMO.

Alright bud think most take payment when you order.

As you've no doubt seen no one complains about what they receive from T.White but I think there's a serious waiting list. If i was you i'd go for a Robin Cook, Tony Glover, Dan Shelton or an Aurora Cue (off poolqjunkie I think).

From what i've seen all these cues are top notch and not heard a bad thing said about any.

      Good luck.

robin cook all the way imo he makes the best cues out there. you will pay around 250 for a plain ebony and ash which in my opinion are easly on par with parris ultimates and 350 for a ebony and 4 splice cue with base socket.

Thanks for the replies so far, i'm considering a Trevor White. Like i said I don't mind waiting for the right cue, but I guess if i waited too long I would get frustrated. What sort of time scale are we talking about though?

I have been on Tony Glovers website, it scares me . I have heard alot of good things about the cue-makers you mentioned. Too many to choose from so I'm taking my time with this one and I guess i'll have to read reviews from members on here and take my pick.

          Thanks again

6 months min I think. Pm him Trevs1.

The others would be a month or two any how.
There's a few threads about Glover and Cook cues all look stunning.

Hey PD Just another few comments from me. The other cue-makers that are mentioned in the posts have excellent reputations. To get good advice it would be helpful if you could post what exactly you're after. Some folks are after highly decorative multi-spliced cues and others want top quality shaft with the best grade of Ash (or Maple). Quality extensions and a good case also need to be factored into the cost.
Personally, UNLESS you're a top pro, I would not want to spend more than a grand!! For that I'd expect a superb cue, PLUS extensions and a quality leather cue case.

Going to a cue maker to custom is only when their is no stock cue which fits your specs or preferences.

If you are able to find something out there which is on stock or 2nd hand in your spec, you will save on the cost and time in waiting.

There are currently alot of cue on sale, including a JP champion by Hotpot.

                Good luck in your search.

                  The spec i'm thinking of

                  jointed 3/4
                  Length: 57.75"
                  Weight 17.5oz
not sure what choices i have for a balance point if thats an option available.

Good quality ash shaft: tip size 9.5mm for snooker and a 8.5mm for pool

ebony butt diameter 29.5mm with 8 burrwood splices for upper and lower timbers, and white vaneers in between them if that makes sence?. I've used the MW virtual cue to pick those these specs.

                  S.D joint

I suppose it is a pretty standard spec and maybe a cue-maker has it in stock already or something close that needs adjustments.

                    Ditto

There are a few cues knocking about on this forum . You don't need to pay anywhere near £900.00 to get a decent cue .

I have a used Trevor White for sale which has been refurbished by ADR147 and is in new condition. 17.9oz, 58", 29mm butt, 9.5mm brass, balance at 17" with 2 splices and 2 points (maple and burrwood I think). #/4-butt joint and perfectly straight and smooth with close grained ash. Nice honey-golden colour on the ash, which is ultra smooth and feels like maple it's so smooth.

For 400pounds with mini-butt, + shipping which is usually about 40pounds to Britain

Considering leaving the pool team after the summer league ends and joining the snooker team. So I think I will just buy one shaft to suite my snooker needs.

Terry, do you have any pictures of the cue, if I like the splicing then I will certainly be interested in buying it.
