  • cue butt timber

    righto
am considering having a cue made (well decided already) (craftsman or mastercraft)
however, am into plain, without too much going on. what id like is a 1 piece cue of maple with a butt, that has no splicing, therefore am looking for types of timber to make the butt out of that has the decoration.
    the options appear to be
    coccobolo
    mexican rosewood
    maccasar
as every piece of wood differs its really not viable looking at the individual pice but the type of wood.
does anyomne have any othersuggestions. i dont want ebony with splicings, an i deffo dont want ebony. all other suggestions are appreciated, but it has to be a grained wood that will polish up an take away the plainess of having no splicings.

With Rosewood there are many types.

Mexican rosewood is usually refered to as Bocote. Which is quite pale in colour with dark brown to black irregular lines. Look out of East Indian and Honduras rosewoods.

Cocobolo is a lovely wood and even with little work it takes a fine polish and can look stunning if the right piece is chosen.

Macassar, like ebony, is a lovely wood that also polishes up well. But also look out for Asian striped ebony which can be beautiful.

Others you might want to consider is purpleheart, if you can get a piece that is curly it would look stunning. Kingwood has some lovely figure to it too.

Bocote would look very nice although it is not as dense as ebony or cocobolo which is also a great choice.
Snakewood would be awesome but is more pricey.
Some other wood I can think of off the top of my head is Goncalo Alves, Kingwood, Ziricote...
I think any stable and dense wood is good actually, as long as it is done by a competent cue maker.
Has anyone seen a cue made with zebrawood...I think that would work, too.

                    Cheers,

I have some Kingwood in various shades, and found some dark cocobolo and some very orangy/brown cocobolo. Also have Olivewood, purpleheart and some lightly striped ebony.

I'll send you some pictures over after work tonight.

                    Dan

I have some massive 28" long and 1 1/2" pieces of ebony if your doing it as a first attempt or so. Its not the best quality as it has some silca deposits in it, but still does the job if your messing about for the minute. Can do a piece for £10 if you like. Like above i do have a few other bits and pieces at the moment or if your after something I can help point you in the right direction as sourcing wood seems to be one of the hardest things at times.
