slightly off topic, do you use pearwood for shafts ?
is it massively more expensive than maple ?

Like above i do have a few other bits and pieces at the moment or if your after something I can help point you in the right direction as sourcing wood seems to be one of the hardest things at times.

however, am into plain, without too much going on. what id like is a 1 piece cue of maple with a butt, that has no splicing, therefore am looking for types of timber to make the butt out of that has the decoration.
          the options appear to be
          coccobolo
          mexican rosewood
          maccasar
as every piece of wood differs its really not viable looking at the individual pice but the type of wood.
does anyomne have any othersuggestions. i dont want ebony with splicings, an i deffo dont want ebony. all other suggestions are appreciated, but it has to be a grained wood that will polish up an take away the plainess of having no splicings.
I have just made a butt out of some "fiddle back" eucolyptus.
Lovely looking but a little light. ( cue now ways 15.5 oz ) Saying that,
it is only used for 8 ball pool,

Got any pics of that? I've never seen that wood before...

By the way, my cue is 15.5oz, and it's just fine!! (UK 8ball too though.)

for 20 years me 8ball cue was 6.1 m tip an weighed 14oz
however have found with age the weight means less than the length.

Sorry about the quality of the photo.

This is my first ever atempt at cue making so it's no "dan shelton" or "mike wooldridge"! P.S. I only made the butt section.

It looks very nice on your cue, tbh. I'd never seen that wood before, especially not on a cue - is it going to be stable enough to stay straight over time? I hope so for you.
What you've done looks just fine, now all you have to do is get some splicing on the shaft and you'll be well on your way... :snooker:

                    Happy cueing,
                    Keith

Google imageshack. goto the site. Browse for your file and in "image resize" set to "640 x 480" and click "Upload now". When done you will have a series of link boxes on the bottom left hand side. Copy the information out of the "Forum Code" box and paste into your message on TSF.

Click on new reply, then either click on the paper clip symbol, "choose" your pics then upload, then you need to click on the arrow next to the paper clip to attach them (i think lol) OR if you have your pics on photobucket you just click on the yellow mountain square & paste your link into the box
                          good luck

Respect! You actually went out and did it while I am still sitting on my butt thinking about it.

Apart from the good "woodfinder" website referred to above I also found this lovely website to drool over as a good reference for exotic hardwoods- http://www.hobbithouseinc.com/personal/woodpics/

Open the page on Bublinga and you will see what i mean - stunning.

Maybe we wannabe DIY cue builders must open a thread were we can share info and tips freely. Seems that the pro's who are commercially active is (understandably) not always very forthcoming with advise.
