  • Question to cue makers

Just curious as to what size and type of hand planes you use to make your cues?
I was thinking a spoke shave might be a good one to use when getting to the finishing stages?

you would need a 59in spoke shave(only joking bud) seriously it would not be practical to use a spoke shave, spoke shaves only have a very short sole, the longer the sole of the plane the more accurate you can be(straighter)hope i have made sense.

              To the O.P.

If you look at the wooden block the worker is using there, and then, look at the blocks of wood lodged into the side of the bench, you'll see they all have a curved sole of varying radius', and also, have a dowel (or handle / grip) sticking out of one side of the block. They also have a small iron (or blade) which is sticking out from the top of the block (plane body). That iron (or blade) is what is holding the planes in the bench and stopping them falling through onto the floor.

So if I'm correct you need specialised planes?
Not the normal ones we have at home.

Good Day, I am not sure if I am supposed to be asking a question here. Is there a reason that cuemakers dont offer silver and/or ebony ferrules. Is there a reason that I cannot find a cue that is constructed with an ebony wood joint, I read up on the wood and it is very strong. I think a ebony butt, Maple Upper Butt, Ebony Joint, Maple Shaft and an ebony Ferrule would be a great all wood cue.

                  Cheers,
