  • cue hanger

My playing cue is a slightly warped one piece cue. The warp is only noticeable when you roll the cue and it doesn't seem to affect playability at all. I'm going to hang the cue when it's not being take to the club and have a safe place at home to do so.

I know of the rubber cue hangers but not sure if the billiards suppliers in the area have one.

Suggestions on how to hang a cue perfectly straight with some home made gadgetry? Perhaps some sort of scissor contraption? Rubber bands? Can't seem to figure this out!!

    Thanks!

I normally tie it up using a macramie knot and one piece of thick wool
    works well
I will make a drwaing and place it here later

Just jimmied up my own little cue hanger. Works great and keeps the centered pretty well I think! Hope this hanger straightens out my cue over the coming weeks/months. When I'm not at the club, will keep in this contraption. Will replace black electrical tape with piece of bike tube.

      Materials required:
      1. Any suitable heavy duty clip (with just enough pressure to hold on to cue as too strong could damage cue over time)
      2. Shoe lace/string
      3. Hook of any kind with a smooth hole (so shoe lace can move freely through and allow you to balance)
      4. black tape

Nice home made hanger set-up there
BUT does hanging a cue like this really straighten out warped cues ????
Got to better than nothing, but without any other additional weights/bending etc will the warp ever come out

You can hang your cue up this way. Very simple.

Yeah.. does it really works by hanging it without any extra weight will help. Relying on gravitity alone will take you ages..

Well probably it will take ages and ages without doing some intensive heating/steaming, and hanging weights. But I'm not going to do that. Wood is porous and fibrous (even maple) and so heating/steaming causes the fibres to break down and the pores to open. It's been said that heating/steaming a cue to repair a bend and using physical force (vertical or horizontal), can "soften" a cue over time. Well, that's what I read anyways.

So I'm just taking my sweet time. I think the warp in the cue came in as a result of leaving the cue in the car a few times so in theory, if wood has memory, it should be able to go back straight :snooker:

If the warp is inherent in the wood, then almost certainly not. However, if the warp is as a result of mistreatment (common problem is leaving in car), then it's possible for the cue to go back to straight. Usually, heating/steaming and brute force do a better/faster job then simply hanging.

But then consider this: a cue left against a wall in your closet at an angle tends to warp over time. So can't it straighten over time too by hanging then?

I have seen a lot of people on here store cues horizontally in a case. Oooh.. don't know about that now. Surely, that can't be good?

                  here is the drawing

just one piece of soft wool

generally better to use thicker piece of wool as it applies less pressure to the shaft

Wouldn't want ridges appearing by using a very thin piece of straing etc.

you would need a hook or some protruding object to hang it from

This is the easiest and cheapest method to hang a cue

In addition to the hanging, I used a technique recommended to me by Terry Davidson for cue straightening and it worked great! Thanks Terry!
