  • Price for tip alteration?

    Hello all.

Ive just bought a new snooker cue. My old cue is a 3/4 machine spliced 'cannon/peradon'

Now I have my new cue, I was considering having the tip on my old cue brought down to 8.5mm for uk pool.

Obviously the cue isnt brilliant or valuable, worth more in sentimental value to me to be honest. So I dont want to be paying fortunes to get it done but I could like to carry on using the cue from time to time. What kind of money are we talking for this? roughly?

    all the best,

It would take a little work on your part but you can do this yourself. You would need a fine file meant for metal and a digital calipher and I doubt if that would be more than 20pounds at your local DIY.

Then take the tip off the cue, hold the file flat against the ferrule and the top of the shaft and start filing around the cue, turning it after every stroke. Dpending on what size it is now it might take some work and also look and see how thick the ferrule is to begin with as you might make it too thin when you take it down to 8.5mm.

The tough part is getting the shaft of the cue to properly bevelled once you take down the ferrule so that might take a bit of sanding on the last 8in or so of the shaft. After sanding use fine steel wool and then some fine emery cloth (600 at least) and then some linseed oil once you're done. If you want a really fine finish get some 1000 & 2000 grit emery cloth from the automotive section.

Finally, to take out the file marks in the ferrule (don't use a lot of pressure when filing) use the 600 grit and pinch it on the ferrule with one hand and then rotate the cue with the other and this will polish up the ferrule.

It depends where you live in the UK, but if you go to a cuemaker it should cost about £10 - £20 and won't take long at all. Coutts Cues will do it for about £12ish if you're near Lincoln, Mastercraft near Telford will do it for about £20, Craftsman Cues in Kippax will do it too. Have a look around and see if there's a cuemaker near you, or a shop which sells cues like Green Baize in Cleveland would be able to do it for you too.

      Hope this helps!

seems pointless to me when a professional can do it for less than you are going to pay for equipment needed to do it.
