  • Advise on New Cue for Pool which can be shortened for limited space venues

    Hi All,

After playing League Snooker for the past 25 years I've been persuaded to jopin the local Pub Pool League.

Some of the Venue's have limited space so need a cue that I can shorten when required.

A lot of the ones with the Mini butt's won't screw onto the shaft, only the end of the cue.

Can anyone recommend me one, ideally under the £100 mark.

    Cheers
    Hewey

Do you already have a jointed cue?
If you do you could have a shorter butt made for smaller room's

Yes I do have a good snooker cue but don't fancy using that for pool as knowing me I'll have too many beers one night and leave it somewhere.

Also ideally want a 9-9.5 mm tip.

Hi Hewey, I was looking for the same thing as I'm currently playing for a pool team. After a bit of searching I noticed on ABC snooker web site that Peradon do cues for 8 ball where the mini butt fits into the main shaft. Google ABC snooker and then look on the right hand side of the page under 'Pool Specials', you'll see what I mean.

        Good luck

        Cheers

There used to be a cue that was good for pool, split down well and was cheap. It was called something like Barracuda blue moon. The lower half was blue, top ash.
Good cheap pool cue, with the empasis on cheap.

Playing league pool in pubs is crap these days. A venue that has limited room round the table is not going to be somewhere where they look after the tables in any way. So expect beer stains and bad rolls from where the tables are moved about and abused.

I prefer a bigger tip (9.5-10mm) which is why I use a snooker cue for pool. I think those cues I mentioned come with small 8-8.5mm tips which is not ideal. There's obviously a gap in the market, unless someone here tells us any different ;-)

OK cheers, yep I know about the venues not been good but after 25 years of Premier division snooker I've got to the stage of just wanting to go out with the lads for a few beers and have a bit more of a laugh.

Last season my team played pool at a gentlemens establishment after the opposing team switched venue at short notice. Now you wouldn't get that in Premier division snooker :-)

I think that most snooker players coming to pool will feel much more comfortable playing with a 9mm plus tip than trying to convert allout to an 8mm pool cue.
Snooker players tend to have a good cue action and with the lighter cue ball, they can generally get enough white action with a larger tip.
I went from snooker to pool and tried an 8mm tip and found i was hitting the ball far too hard and getting much more action than required. I settled on 9mm as a good compromise.

I'd try Craftsman if I were you. All their 3/4 cues have the joint in 'upside-down' so's you can attach the mini-butt to the shaft thereby shortening your cue without losing too much weight. I think their lowest-priced cue is around the £145 mark, and the quality is much better than Peradon's.

As an alternative, if you're prepared to wait a few weeks, ask them to make you a plain-butt 147 cue jointed at 7" or 8" from the end of the butt. I got them to make some up like that and am delighted with the result - in fact, I still have a couple left if you're interested: one is 55" long, t'other 56", both about 17oz weight, 8.5mm tips, ash shafts. They've sold like hot cakes!
Il n'y a pas de problemes; il n'y a que des solutions qu'on n'a pas encore trouvées.

For many years I supplied the French company Billards Chevillotte who have a head office in Orleans and a branch in Lyon. They had a fine selection of all accessories. May be worth a try!!!. F.

                          Thanks for the replies chaps.

                          Will take a look.

What are the Riley cues like these days some of those appear to be able to attach the Mini Butt direct to the shaft.

Keith is right, for the money you cant do better than Craftsman at Kippax.Another point worth mentioning is that Craftsman mini and tele extensions fit both the shaft and main butt if you have a cue made with a butt joint, therefore increasing the versatility of said cue.You can personalise,to some extent,Craftsman cues before they are built such as tip diameter and weight,Rileys you can not do so.
