  • Wanting to buy a new cue

    Hello people,

I currently looking to buy a new snooker cue however looking around the forums people are saying go either John Parris or Trevor White. However looking around on what some players are playing with whilst travelling the UK in snooker tornaments i see quite a few people with Stamford Cues. I know that people say go for John Parris but is he really worth that extra money for one as if i was going to buy one of his it would be an ultimate. Going along the trevor white cues been told there just as good a John Parris but slightly cheaper. I currently do like some of the designs of john parris, trevor white and Stamford cues. So really stuck in what to go for as i know they all will be made to a high standard and will play correctly.

So really is it worth spending the extra money or will the slightly cheaper ones be just as good as it is not always about the price of the cue but how well its made and how well its plays.

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated and would like to thank you in advance.

I have had 3 or 4 parris cues and havent got on with any of them what i have been told is that parris older cues are better than the new ones.
Plus i have a trevor white on order so cant comment on it till i get it.(6-8 months away)
    :-(
Dont know anything about stamford as i have never seen one.
At the minute i am playing with a mastercue special one piece which in my eyes is a cracker cue for the price i paid for it and as good or better than any parris i have owned.
which i got from stu @ green baize who is a great guy and easy to deal with.

imo your just paying extra for the badge with a parris.

i'm sure some guys swear by them, and good luck to them, but you can get better for your money with a lot of other makers.....

Strangely enough my situation is very similar. I have been playing with a JP Elite cue for the last twelve years or so, but have never really got on with it. This may sound silly or stupid but although it is a very solid and reasonably well made cue - I feel it is dead or lacks feel in shots. I know many would say that is is almost sacrillege to say that about a JP cue, but this is how I feel about it.

I am now taking the same route and have a TW on order - also due about Aug time. The thing with cues is - it does not really matter who makes it so much as whether it feels right to you, but buying a good quality cue will always stand you in good stead.

Just been looking around on the internet and wondering what people also think regarding a cue made by Tony Glover what is his standard like compared to Parris and Trevor Whites.

I m currently playing with a Tony Glover cue.

Have to say that i have nothing against his cue, his workmanship is tip-top and always spot-on on your requirements request.

            Wait time now is 16weeks.
I will dare to say is work is much better than current JP cue standard.

Thanks Willytan. Would you say that a stamford cue would be as good as a tony glover one or worse for quality.

I have not seen or played with a Stamford cue before so i cant comment on that.

                  MaccyD

I have had my JP handmade cue for 23 years now and it is is as straight and true as the day I bought it. I can't comment on the newer cues but I wouldn't look any further than a JP handmade stick. :snooker:

I have no doubt on the quality and craftsmanship of old John Parris cues which are at least (12-15yrs).
They are some of the best cue you can buy then but now, the JP cues are merely hit & miss.
Unless you know John well, i doubt he will do anything with your cue order. I had a bad experience with John and i have given up hope on his work.

I think Mark Selby & Ding Junhiu play with stamford cues.

Also in the same village as stamford cues is Robin Cook (robincues.co.uk)

His work is top notch, I havent seen cues from all the makers like other people on this forum but in general, there seems to be a top tier of cue makers and then a second tier and then a third tier. Any of the top tier cues are as good as each other.

One may suit you but not the next person etc.
