  • Cue maintenance - white spirit - good or bad?

Can using white spirit damage your cue? To get rid of deep dirt/grime etc... before re-oiling.

NO. I use it to clear dust etc. prior to repolishing.

Used lightly and allowed to evaporate prior to further work perhaps you can elucidate on your reply.

using linseed oil does the job just as well,

just applied a second lot to mine after leaving the first to dry overnight and the amount of dirt that has come out of the grain was unbelievable!!!

its lovely having a nice smooth cue again with a warm glowing tone to the ash

Would white spirit be okay for taking the varnish off a cue?

Andy, You think that what your getting there is not dirt coming out of the grain but the actual black grain filler?

Also alot of grain fillers are solvent based so I wouldnt think that white spirit is going to be the best option for cleaning the shaft down. Think a damp towel will clean the shaft best and not take away any of the original filler or oil finish.

jason, was definitely dirt the filler remained untouched as it was blue /green dirt not black /dark brown, its not my cue any more as got rid of it for my new one in september

White Spirit can be used to thin linseed oil, allowing it to absorb into the cue faster and cure quicker... I'm guessing it doesn't harm the cue at all.
If you want to play the pink, but you're hampered by the red, you could always try to play the brown!

Yes but in that case it's diluted by the oil? I'm suspicious of white spirit. I refinished a maple cue with 50% linseed oil and it never hit the same again, though the finish looked great.

You can use a little bit of soap with the water according to JP's old website I think. Don't know if he's still saying that now.
