Removing a stain from a cue

I have a strange orangey stain which has appeared in a couple of places on one of my cues. No idea what it is but it's starting to annoy me now as it's really noticeable on the maple splice. I've tried very light sanding, wire wool and rubbing with a wet cloth but nothing has touched it - any ideas anyone?
