  • Keith Auld Cues

Keith Auld would be my local cuemaker and I have considered getting cues made by him but it appears he is not very well regarded.

What are the issues with Keith Auld? Ability? Workrate? Honesty? Personality?

I had already done so but was hoping for a 'bottom line' answer rather than a lot of rants which seem heated although possibly justified.

I wondered if anyone has had any recent dealings with him too.

Firstly I have not had any dealings with Keith Auld and this is my summation.
In the past is that he got ill, and left a few people in the lurch and out of some money.
He is now back working, and I would say that his quality is ok for the money but not the best.
I am sure he is a nice bloke to do business with but he may have burnt his bridges on this forum in the past.

I put an order in and cancelled it because of what I read on the forum.
He was understanding and blamed certain members as being out to destroy his rep for there own purposes. I don't actually agree with his comments and made my decesion based on two factors
1 His cues have little or no resell value.
2 There was a picture of a cue showing his shocking work.
I got a cue from JP in the end and to be truthfull the first cue I got from JP was a shocker which I changed and ended up getting a very good cue.

Thanks guys, It has been helpful to have some considered feedback. I like to do my research and I was shocked that there was a lot of anger and bad feelings towards him.

I had a Keith Auld cue about 20 years ago and i liked it .
The best thing to do will be to go to his workshop and try one out . They are cheap for a handmade cue .
I believe that he offered Cazmac to try the cue before he paid for it .
Still trying to pot as many balls as i can !

No disrespect to anyone here, but are you really going to judge a guys cue making ability on the responses from folks on a forum? You need to find out for yourself, by playing with one.

Most guys I know don't know a good cue from their elbow, as when I pick their cues up they often feel like old tooth picks. I'm sure they would hate mine too.

In other words, everyone has a different opinion about cues, and what is best for them. How do you know whether the guys who've answered you, either on this forum, or any other, know squat about cues, or the cue maker you discuss?

Are the guys who answer you consumate professionals or guys who've just made their first 20 break? Are they drawing their opinion on 50 years experience of cue making or 2 hours down the local pool hall once a month?

You don't know anyone here, yet would make your decision based on their answers?

Try one. If it's good for you, you'll never sell it, so who cares about resale.

A good cue is how it plays in 'your' hands - nobody elses - end of.

Thanks Slippy Shaft, was that an offer to give me £250 to take a punt? I didn't think so!

Cues are a very personal thing and I too believe in 'Different Strokes for Different Folks' hence why my questions are more focused on the service and experience, and whether I will actually get a cue at the end of it.

I am awaiting a suitable time to visit Keith at his workshop to go through the details and hopefully get something started.

Slippy Shaft, there are some very knowledgeable, experienced and supportive members on this Forum. If you don't care about peoples's opinion why are you spending time on a Forum!?!

What a strange and ungrateful reply. The fact that you're asking guys you've probably never met, about a guy they've probably never met, about a cue they most certainly won't have played with reassures me that there's no need to take your reply in the unnecessarily rude way in which it was intended. Who says I don't care about peoples opinions? It's important to remember they are just that though ..... opinions. In this case, it is yours that you need to trust the most, and you can only do that by meeting the guy and trying his cues.

I apologise for my reply it is was intentionally a bit spiky in response to your post.

I felt that your post 'read' in a very condescending way and unnecessarily made some remarks about the quality of members here. I have received nothing but sound advice.........so far!

I am grateful for your comment and the sound advice in it, just a shame that it was lost amongst "Most guys I know don't know a good cue from their elbow" & "You don't know anyone here, yet would make your decision based on their answers?" & "know squat about cues"

Thanks for your time and I wish you luck on the forum and on the green baize

Did you read the first 5 words of my post friend?

There has to be a certain amount of logic in life, and you have to look beyond the first impression sometimes to find the true value. Perhaps read what I wrote again, and you'll possibly find a different interpretation.

For example, the comment regarding 'most guys I know don't know a good cue from their elbow' was intended to highlight the huge difference of opinion about what is good, and was diluted with the secondary comment of 'I'm sure they would hate mine too'.

You'll also find if you read it again that the other comments were preceeded with the question 'how do you know?' ..... if they no squat. There's a bit of a difference in what I wrote, and what you read.

I'm not here to explain everything I write though. Those who take the time to read my thoughts, just as I've taken the time to write them, are able to do so free of charge. I don't remember charging you for my advice, so feel free to read it, or pass on to the next post.

Have a nice day, and hope you make the right decision what ever that decision might be. It's a wonderful game, but be sure to play it more, and talk about it less.

                              Hi Stupree,
The advice I would give you echoes that of some of the other guy's advice. Why not go and pick up a few of the cues and give them a try. I recently did the same at craftsman cues, and as one of the staff there said, you could have 2 completely identcial cues with exactly the same specs, and each one would play completely differently to the other.
I was also in the same situation as you, but with a cricket bat. I went to a cricket forum trying to research a particular bat manufacturer. The majority of members on there said how shockingly bad the bats from this maker were, but i went and picked up a few of these bats regardless of the bad comments. I ended up buying one and it has honestly turned out one of the best bats I have ever played with.

Sorry to ramble on, lol, but just my advice to you.

                              All the best,
                              Tom
