A mate of mine when we were teenagers, was an apprentice joiner and the bloke he was working with at the time, was a cabinet maker and showed him how to go on. So he made a cue, but the joint between the ash and butt, was REALLY a joint. Four points on each piece of wood and slotted together. .. If you can understand what I mean.
I thought then, that is how cues were made. But have found recently that people do not make them that way. I do not know if that was the way in years gone by.
