Jim, I imagine I will build up a stock pile of odds and sods. Seem to be getting a few bits here and there, not cheap tho is it.

I applaud you for doing this and keeping a blog for posterity and to share your experiences. I am going to attempt turning a few shafts but I won't be willingly sharing my shocking efforts!!

        Keep it up mate

At this stage I really want to build some confidence and would like to just get 'very good' at plain butts with maybe a front splice.

That said I am amassing a variety of bits and pieces.

                    cue making

ime still experimenting with glues jason ivetried 3-4 different types or trade names ive had bits fly off in lathe with some of them the harder more dense woods take a bit of glueing sometimes, use a polyurathane sometimes but use a different one on the veneers cos the polyurathanes too messy

Wouldn't have thought that Araldite was any good for that job.. Also, you can get better epoxies than Araldite.

If you think, once its all stuck down, all finished and the cue is being used, then the glue hasnt got to do much of a job other than hold it together. Its not like its supporting any huge weight or has any resistance being applied on it.
Think its got to be strong enough to hold the splices on while being worked and be very thin so it doesnt show.
Araldite was one glue that a pretty well known cue maker said he uses.
