  • Started on my 2nd cue today. Lathe has gone in, will really help with getting a perfect round cue.

The ash ive started tapering down today looks to have very even chevrons. Will make a cracking cue, just go to decide what to do on the butt front. Got loads of different woods and may treat it to ebony with a nice front splice of cocobolo.
Also found a very old maple and ebony hand spliced cue and have started re-splicing the butt with some Bubinga splices.
Will put some photos up once I have some progress.

The original cue is just waiting for the badges to arrive and will then be finished.

it will plane better than turning i think,it turns alright when doing a bowl but on the butt it came of in chunks its a bit corkish if you know what i mean thats what makes me think i was working across the grain instead of with it

          • Yeah sounds like it. I may just finish the butt on the bench and avoid the lathe with that altogether.

              • Great job jason. Looking forward to the photos.

Are you posting how much Mike is paying?

If not can you pm the price to me.

As for the numbers and future cues, when you start making maple. are these going to be numbered seperate starting from 001?

                • Funnily enough, just enquired about maple with my supplier. Any maple cues will not start from 001, just carry on sequentially.
Mike F got the cue for a 'materials only' price as he expressed early on that he wanted it and will keep it.
Give me a month and cue 002 will be ready and will hopefully be a cracker.

                  • I am sure 002 will be equally brilliant if not better than 002.

Have you played a game with 001 yet?

I have made a PM enquiry about maple cue.

Never seen any james bond films but I am sure a big james bond fan will want 007!

                          • Not read the whole thread yet, but about 20 years ago, I thought I'd have a go at this!

Not wanting to risk any cash, I got a broom handle out of the stores at work and some contrasting wood for the butt. Using a very sharp hand plane, I made it into a tapered square, then octagon, and then took the edges off that to make it round (that was the hard part as it's slightly oval in places).

I melted and cast my own lead weight, hand spiced the butt, and the end result played suprisingly well! Who would have thought a broom handle could have a bit of power to it! I'll post some pics for you all.

A few months later I came across an ancient bit of 2" diameter ash with a good looking grain that used to have a landing net or similar on the end. After a year of studying the grain I managed to make a brilliant looking shaft, and obtain some ebony for the butt, but this is as far a I got and it's unfinished. Daren't touch it now. Maybe I'll entrust it to someone else to finish.
