Though it's sounds impossible. But my maple cue really tends very soft, easy to play with side but bloody poor when playing a stun shot. I meam this shaft lacks of elasticity (normaly we know maple is more elastic than ash ).Can some one tell me any ways to make the shaft harder?Or will it become harder with time passes?(I 've been using it a year). Thanks!:snooker:

you said that you find it easy to play with side but not so when playing a stun shot... maybe you need to hold the butt a wee bit firmer to get a good stun reaction.
now, i don't know how to make your shaft harder/stiffer, or anyone else's for that matter... perhaps changing the tip would be less painful than chopping and changing the shaft... ouch!
ok, jokes aside, my suggestion is to experiment with different types of cue tips first (easy to do) then consider making alterations to your cue (may not be reversible). many different types of tips available on the market now.
cheers!!When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back. GET MAD!!

I heard that you rub some good quality oil in all over the shaft.
Do this for a few minutes until it can't take any more, finish, and clean-up any excess mess with a towel.

The only way I would think possible to harden wood is with fire so not really recommended to throw your cue on a fire.
I have always thought of taking a soft / not stiff cue into the gyms sauna and see what happens.
The heat might cause it to warp but it somehow if I locked into a stand position, it may work.
Anyway dont take that as advice as it may not work just something I pondered a little while back.

You can get the cue shortened by half an inch,it will make the cue less whippy. My deep screw shot

I believe the stiffness of the cue largely depends on the density, spring of the wood, as well as the taper and length. You cannot really change the first two properties, but you might be able to do something with the latter two to get a stiffer hit. If your shaft is too light there isnt a great deal you can do to make it play much stiffer expect by trying to shorten it and may be with a very thick and straight taper.
What cue is it?Last edited by poolqjunkie; 27 March 2011, 09:43 AM.
