On a more SERIOUS note I have read some where that a certain pool cue maker puts a steel rod in the centre of the shaft I wood not advocate putting metal into a cue but a strong piece of hardwood might do the job the glue alone would stiffen the shaft. I'm pretty sure that a good cue maker would have the skill and tools to do this work but is there a demand for it and how much would work like this cost. There is also the possibility the wood could split during the process. Would be nice to hear from a cue maker.
You could put some kind of hard varnish on the cue but then the cue would stick in you hand.

If your shaft is too light there isnt a great deal you can do to make it play much stiffer expect by trying to shorten it and may be with a very thick and straight taper.
        What cue is it?
thanks alot my friend.it's an unknown inferior maple cue,but quite love it ,last week i have it changed to 18oz by a master,(used to be 18.5oz)seems it's getting worse now,i couldn't control it like before. Some day i'm gonna change a new cue.

I spoke to a cuemaker about this as i have a cue that is really nice but lacks a bit of oomph , especially with heavy whites .

Dont think you can do much about the response in the shaft but a liitle more weight will make it feel more solid .

I think I have a cure to stiffen shaft...

              1) Turn on T.V

              2) Tune in to snooker

              3) Hold shaft in firm grip

              4) Watch michala

              5) Decide if you prefer pink or brown

Shaft should now be ok, but if this doe's not work try steps one to three again but change 4and 5.

              4) Watch the big Dutch bloke

              5) Concentrate only on the brown

              each to there own..
              Easy on the garlic....

airdry it for a week or two, then change to harder tip, like talisman hard. may be a bit stiffer but not much if you want it to. hope this helps
                        It's in the Shaft

I have once shortened a cue by more than an inch, it became much stiffer than before. But if you cannot play with much shorter cue, I think you do not have much options other than getting a new one. Good luck.

I know there is a product called wood hardener. It is mainly for strengthening rotten wood.
It is very 'corrosive" and is a pain to clean up(acetone is required).
I have used this product mainly in restoring furniture and for sealing some very porous wood but not on cue shafts.
Has anyone tried it on a shaft to see if it is possible to make it stiffer?
