  • Rex Williams Original

    Hi all,

Years ago I purchased a new PowerGlide Rex Williams Original (No 317). I immediately took it to Sheriden Cues in Sheffield and had it converted into a 3/4 piece. Due to family and business commitments, I had a gap of 9 years playing but have just started again and thought I'd try out a Kamui Black on it.

I love everything about this cue and would never part with it but wonder in true 'Antiques Roadshow' style when it was made and how much it's worth. Can anyone offer any comment or information about it? If you've got one, what does it play like?

(For some reason I never got the certificate of authenticity but believe it's one of 750?)

I remember the year my father bought me a PowerGlide Rex Williams for my Christmas i was just about to turn nine at the time, i am 38 years old now. the reason i remember it so vividly is because the old git took it off me Christmas morning and gave me his old riley 2 piece instead..hahaha. when i did finally get it at 17 (after he treated himself to another new cue) he too had got it made into a 3/4 cue. no idea why because he didnt have any extensions to go with it Anyway back to the cue, i played with it for a year or so then gave up Snooker for American nine ball and beer...hangs head in shame!!!........... so three kids later and a marriage break up, i eventually get the powerglide off my Ex-wife last year who had stored it safely case-less in the loft??EH!???. i could've cried when i saw it. no tip, the Ferrule was covered in verdigree it had a slight bend in it and what first looked like woodworm turned out to be black tar like spots, dont ask!!!...so i set to work restoring and re-finishing the cue. It is now back to its former glory if not better and all the older guys really like it down the club. every story needs a happy ending and here is mine....After trying a few different tips on it i eventually settled for the Kamui black also and last Saturday i won my first tournament in 24 years with my old/new cue. the first of many more i hope

Don't know how much this cue is worth but i'd say it has lost a bit of value off what it would be as original...

              Shame that...

Look forward to a full piccie...

I remember going in to a sports shop in Glasgow when i was about 13 at the time i thing it was called Greaves or Lumleys. My dad was looking at some cues on the racks that they are in for people to view them..any way there was a couple of other cues in a glass display case..my father asked the guy in the shop if he could have a look at the cues. The first cue he looked at was a Rex Williams origional with a plain black hand splice ebony butt and a nice big square badge...now this was in the early 80's and they wanted close to £200+ for the cue. Hope this helps...

Finally made enough posts to upload some pics. Shame about the poor lighting so I'll try again sometime.

Honestly didn't know the specs so out came the tape measure and kitchen scales. Length is 58.1/2", tip is 9.75mm with the digital vernier, weight is 18.5 oz.

I got it from Ashfield Snooker Centre where Tony Jones used to be the resident pro, and paid £150. I think Sheriden charged me £40 for the joint which seems excellent quality and was fitted really well as the grain lines up perfectly like when it was a 1 piece. I reckon I got it in my late teens so it must have been made in the mid-eighties.
