Cue doing well on the bay

So they are worth the money because they are collectable. What do you do with it once you have purchased it. would you put it in a glass case and put it in your private games room?

I dont think it has anything to do with the Steve Davis connection.
The ye olde ash cue was marketed as the top of the range cue that Burroughes and Watts made, hence from its first day of launch it wouldve been the most desirable.That coupled with the fact that the ash on the 1st editions was very distinctive in colour and very very old means that these cues are rare.
If you use ebay as a guide then you will see BW Champions, Mannocks and lots of other BW cues over a 2 month period, you wont see a good Ye olde ash in that time. In fact i think ive only seen 1 definately genuine on there (which Andrew Ramsay sold) on there in the last 5 years, and that was a transitional 1st to 2nd edition.
I only know of 4 genuine 1st Edtion Ye olde ashes in the world today, think Jeff Cundy has one which came via Craig Slater who got it from Andy Hunter and I think Chris Lloyd has one, Gary Rogers had one and Gordon Radford has one.
There are pics on the cueguru site of Gary Rogers cue which shows just how red the ash shaft was.

Its simple, they are desirable by collectors due to being rare which has built up a mythical hype of them being the holy grail.
In terms of antiques, in terms of some cue collections being worth tens of thousands, is £1000 such a steep price? I know a teddy bear collector who would think nothing of spending £1000 of a steif teddy.

I would also think a genuine certified by Andy hunter, red shafted 1st edition in good condition would make a minimum of £1200, possibly closer to £2000.

Why are they so hard to find? Are they being kept by most collectors, or are most of them damaged/missing...etc over the years? I know only few 1st editions were made but there have to be more than 4 even after all these years I would think.

Talking of cues fetching alot of money, I would think this old Marquetry cue will go for alot more than the Ye olde ash.
Now this really is a piece of art.

I spoke to the chap who won the auction, nice guy. I advised speaking to Andy Hunter, taking the cue with him to see him if there was any doubt. Maybe we can make our own guess on the responce he got.... but I haven't heard back. I'll ask the question if you like.. can't hurt.
