There are some interesting replies here, I wouldn't say that I agree with all of them, but is interesting to see how everyone has there own take on it. I was thinking of asking JP to add to this debate, but I think it's unlikely given there seems to be a certain level of hostility to his company. It's true to say that john don't make all his cues and he is training a future generation of cue makers (who knows one of them may turn out to be the best cue maker ever) John does however oversee the work and still buys a selects the timber.
There are many comments on here about johns working practices from members, I would like to know where they get there information from and can they back up there claims.
That said I like the overall tone of the replies.

i don't think john needs to defend himself ok ive heard a few ppl on here say bad things about him but that's mainly about his prices. but if u think his prices are to steep don't buy his cues he must still have plenty of work. i looked at it like this i wanted a jp ultimate which was a bout £890 with a Ali case and butt i wanted its a bit of money but its a life long investment. where as i went to the strippers Saturday night and spent about £700 after u convert it gbp and got nothing for it but a head ache. so its not cheap but i feel he's worth every sent and john has been super helpful and patient with me

I like your style, They must have been some fit strippers. £700 did you get any extras. Second thoughts don't answer that.

I agree sometimes it is hard to understand when seeing some players complaining about cues being too pricey but then they would go and spend more than that in the local pub. I am not saying they are wrong, as each to his own, but it just shows that the price of the cue is not really too much to afford--it is just that their priority is somewhere else.
A JP Ultimate is a cue but, as you said, also an investment especially when it a fancy one. It is also something that is special to you and make you proud to carry around. It will last you many years and give you lots of enjoyment to look at and use, not to mention winning matches and hopefully making some money along the way. It is more like a piece of functional art than a car in my opinion.
About John coming on here to defend himself I think he would not be interested in that and I really dont think he should or needs to. I dont really see anything being said that needs defending to begin with. But either way, I am sure he has a lot of work to do and when he is free, he should spend time enjoying himself if you ask me.
He has chosen to run his business in a certain way. Whether we agree with him or not, in my opinion, we should not forget that John is a great cue maker and has built his reputation upon solid cues that he has made over the last 20+ years to a lot of satisfied pro players and customers.

This thread was not about my cue I merely used it as an example to ask about depeciation. Yet some members have tried to switch it on to my cue, one even suggesting there is something wrong with the cue because I'm selling it. Anyone who has been following my posts knows why I brought the cue and that I was always going to sell the cue as soon as my TW was ready. That day has now come and I just got the pictures from trevor. I personally don't buy into the ultimate, IMO any of his so called stock cues can be an ulitmate, it;s just a name on a badge an ulitmate is not made of magic wood and the simple fact remains that if not for ronnie the ultimate would no be worth as much, yet ronnie can play with any cue.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there jay and your right on both accounts. I like to think that after been in this game for 30+ years and have reached a reasonable standard ( not as good as I used to be mind) that i know a thing or two about cues. So when I'm presented with a shop full of cues and given the option of taking the cue away and trying it out, I think I can pick a good cue.
But like you said if your buying over the net you known that the ultimate should be spot on, nice straight arrows, not to stiff and not too whippy.
