  • Burwat Champion Cue by Burroughes & Watts (Advice Wanted)

    Hi all,

A mate of mine has asked me for some advice on his dad's old cue, an to be honest I haven't a scooby-do about it!

Basically he wants to know if its worth anything or if its kindling!

As the Title says its A Burwat Champion by Burroughes & Watts
Also has Reg No:292596 on the nameplate

Its Maple I would say, stamped 17 Oz, quite short just under 56 inches, 10mm at the tip (but no tip) has no ferrule though! One of the old timers at the club says on old cues this was the case you just glued a tip straight on to the wood! And its none too straight!

I have a couple of pics but struggling to work out how to upload them!

Any advice of a useful nature would be appreciated!
    Cheers in advance.
    Andy

Email pics to me and i'll put them on for you......... john.clarke123@tiscali.co.uk
If it is indeed maple, they are rarer than the ash ones, but being short isn't good really, depends how clear the badge is, but anywhere between £150 to £300 maybe ?? Someone may have differing views

I'm 99% sure that these cues did have ferrules when new, so because yours hasn't got one its probably snapped off/been damaged and thats why cue is short. Only really old cues around 1900's didn't have ferrules, but these cues are way younger than that !

Seeing the condition, length etc of the cue. What would you estimate its worth?

              £100 or more?

                Hiya
I dont think its ebony, appears to some kind of dark brown wood (possibly stained).
Will try for a couple of better pics.

                Cheers

Well you only have to look at recent sales on ebay for a rough idea (see link below) by the way the bottom cue was mine which i sold on this forum, but new owner sold on straight away. I guess the real collectors wouldn't be interested as its a bit short, but then again being maple could go in its favour. Maybe someone wanting one as a playing cue would like it, if length suits them, stick a ferrule on and you have a nice cue. From what i can see it looks good condition too, so i will stick with £150 min (gulp) and probably a whole lot more. Honestly you don't see many maple one's at all.

Probably wrong here, but weren't these cues originally spliced with sonokeling rosewood rather than macassar ebony?

Look at Jason's site for different versions. There are different editions of these cues, the original and most collectable did have rosewood butts i believe yes

Guys this has been really helpful, at least I know the cue is worth a bit more than kindling!

I see your point about the ferrule, now wondering if it was broken and sanded down, but looks a very clean job.

So the question is do I put it on ebay as is? Or take it to someone to add ferrule an tip?
I live in Leeds so would be either Bob Ackers or Craftsmans at Kippax?
Don't know if it takes something away from it having modern work on an old stick?

Here are some clearer pics, i would get ferrule added (and possibly cue straightened at same time) then cue is ready to go - wont cost much at Craftsman's - maybe £20 ??

To be honest I'm open to offers! I'm just gonna get a cut for selling it for my mate.
