Jim, Amboyna, I found its quite nice wood to work with, feels quite soft and cuts well under the plane. Nicer then Thuya, although I much prefer the look of thuya.
Are your black veneers proper ebony? I tried some dyed black 0.6 veneers and they ended looking like a bluey grey shade of black.
