  • Balance point

Hi I have a question to ask all you members, How many of you play with a cue with a balance point of more than 17.5, if so what is the balance point of your cue. It might be usefull to add your cue lenght and your highest break.
The reason I ask is that I have found a cue that I playing really well with and the balance point is 19" and the lenght is 57.5, I've tried many cues in my search for my perfect cue and I have found this cue by chance and don't no what to make of it?

Hi caz, my current playing cue is a John Parris Traditional Cue 3/4 split above splices
        Specs are 58" / 9.5 / 18.4 oz / 29.5 butt / balance point 18" / jointed at 18.5" / splices 17" long
This is the furthest forward balance point i have yet tried and it does feel right i must say, my highest break is still only 48 tho

It's a long and expensive learning curve, but believe me it is worth it when you get there.
                I'll post specs soon

Hi , Caz ,I have used and own cues with balance points of 12" all the way up to 19.5".All I can say is that the further up the balance point is,the more weight is on your bridging hand ( subjective matter anyway as you are only talking parts of an ounce). In previous discussions you have talked about shortening your bridge hand at address, perhaps if you have done this with a more forward weighted cue (19") you can now feel (because of mass/weight increase on bridge) exactly what is now going on with your action.Just a thought.I am sure that Terry or Trev or nrage could throw some more light on the subject.Good luck with the cue ,by the way.

I think my cue is balanced at 17.5" length 58.5" but I'm going to get a new one soon balanced a little further up I think
Highest break 113 but I don't see why that's important :snooker:

Hi old, school I've have changed my stance and am playing with a straighter bridge arm now. It definitely improves stability on the shot and has improved my accuracy, but it takes away from my natural rhythm. I’m sure the more I practice the better I’ll get. I'm going to go back to Del hill soon so I will get him to set me up again.

The reason I'm asking is that from reading many posts on the forum there seems to be a generally accepted view that the normal balance point of a cue is around 17 any thing further forward is front heavy and anything further back is butt heavy. What I'm trying to find out does having a front heavy cue take away from the playability of the cue or it as good if not better than say a cue with a balance point of 19". If there are members with front heavy cues making large breaks then it stands to reason that ther is nothing wrong with a fron heavy cue.

About 10 years ago I asked Mike Wooldridge to make me a cue and during discussion with him he said that (in his opinion) that 18in is a perfect balance point for a cue around the 58in length. Ever since then I have always tried to find cues with a balace point of between 17.5in and 18.5in as that 'feels' right for me. If you are using a cue of around 57in then I guess that bp of 17in is fine and if the cue is around 59in then I guess that 19in is perfect........but, as in everything to do with cues, whatever FEELS right for you IS right!!

Someone did put a post up a while back saying that 57= 17, 57.5 = 17.5, 58 = 18 and so on, this seems like a reasonable formular

Trev has made me three cues. Two at 18 inch balance and one at 16 5/8 inch and much prefer the ones at 18 inches. The two at 18 inches are very slighty over 58" and the other one at 16 5/8 is 57.25" long.
