  • Tip Size

Hi everyone just a weird thought i am going to look at a Tom Newman 1370 cue tomorrow and the tip is 10.5mm what do people think about this is the tip too big to play snooker and pool with these days just want peoples opinions as i dont want the trouble of tapering the cue down.

    Thanks Matt

hi matt, as hotpot had mentioned, it's down to personal preference, although 10.5mm seems a bit big imo.

perhaps just as a reference point, i'm using a 9.8mm tip size currently but i can adapt to tip sizes from 9.5mm to 10mm. i think the difference in tip size becomes significant if there is a deviation of 0.2mm or more from what you are used to playing with.

Pottingpinks must have a 12mil tip on his cue and it doesn't seem to have any ill effects on his game, infact probably the opposit.

I think the general rule/consensus is that a smaller tip means you have to be more accurate about where you strike the ball, but, when you do get it right you can get more action on the ball.

I reckon you will find a 10.5mm tip 'different' to start with, but once you get used to it you'll play fine, perhaps better if you're accuracy isn't 100% (whose is?!).

Q; How much screw can pottingpinks get? Has he compared that to a smaller tip size .. it would be interesting to see if he can see any difference in the amount of screw he gets.

Basically, you can probable generate 'enough' screw with a 10.5mm .. but it might be 'less' than you get with a smaller one, so it's up to you.. how many situations do you get into where you need every mm of screw you can get, and would you be confident to play that shot .. if never and not, then a larger tip will make no real difference to your shot selection/positional play, but it might help the potting.. it's worth a go to see for yourself in any case.

I think the tips in rileys and my other local spot on have 10mm-11mm ferrules/tips so it probably is the same as that.

Have you played with club cues in rileys?

Ok thanks everyone for there opinions i will just give the cue a try when i finally pick it up as everyone was mentioning yeah it would probably take some getting used to but im sure i could get there and i have heard that it could improve my potting as i would be less likely to apply unintentional side so hope that will improve my game.

Jaffa i dont think i have played with the cues at rileys as i think the prices they are charge are shocking i just go to my local legion which has two snooker tables in that are reguarly maintained on a weekly basis so i feel that it is good enough to practise there.

                Thanks for everyones replies.
