  • Smoothing the shaft

Is wire wool ok to use to smooth down an ash shaft.

  • #2
Well ive done it before with no problems, just make sure your using the correct type (0000 grade i think) I rub it up and down the cue, not around it, and keep the pressure constant, ie you dont want to be creating hollows in the shaft. Just use common sense and if your not sure get someone down your club who has done it before to do it with confidence. Then best to give it a going over with raw linseed oil to protect the newly exposed wood.

Cheers, I think I'll be ok.

Just wanted to be sure, before attempting to do this.

Just wanted to say that with an ash shaft (especially) sometimes a "rough" feel could be due to grain-filler dropping out and not a raised bit that needs rubbing down (whether with 0000wire or 2-3000 paper).
If it is fill dropped out, then rubbing down will not correct the "rough" area
There has recently been a thread about grain-filler that could help you.
        All the best

I have found that wire wool sometimes remove the grain anyway.

I would use high grit sandpaper(s) and finish with raw linseed oil or MW oil.

Raw Linseed Oil can be bought at most local ironmongers/DIY stores.

Same here, i'm using super fine wire wool five zero grades #00000 those good types of super fine wire wool ''liberon'' brand, i think made in uk or germany, i rub it very gently up and down around 2 to 3 times on my ash cue, then after oil it and leave it overnight, i still see the minor scratches there, luckily not so deep and could'nt feel the scratches but the grains remove a bit, i think better send it to those experience people to do it for you to refinish your cue again, because 1st thing basically we don't know how to sand it using how much pressure to rub on the shaft.

No, please don't use steel wool on ash as it will remove the grain filler(unless this is what you want to do).
I would use a grade 1200 or near that with a damp cloth between sanding to achieve nice smooth shaft.

Or you can try to use the brand of abrasive paper the brand is ''KLINGSPOR'' made in germany rather than wire wool, look for those super fine types 1500 - 2000 grit, bring along your cue to those experience people to help you to rub it.

I found 3000 paper on ebay no problem.
Something no one has mentioned yet, when using either paper or wire, never rotate the shaft while rubbing, always rub with the grain and not across it (i.e. rotating the shaft).

I recently bought a shaft slicker, dont know what the material is on the inside but its leather on the outside use both sides on the shaft and its brilliant leaves shaft really smooth but dosnt damage the wood
