  • "lifeless" cue shafts, all in the mind?

I had a play with a spare cue today. It currently has a BD tip on it. This seems very soft and 'spongy'. However, this cue seems "lifeless" ( if this is the correct term ).

My old, JP cue seems to be more "active" in comparison, I am not sure if this is just purely down to the tip.

I am concerned I just won't get on with the new TW cue as I'm just TOO used to this older cue I've used? Obviously, there is no way for me to tell until I have a play with it myself. In the meantime I'm ripping off that BD tip off the spare cue for now.

This other cue seems cumbersome "lifeless". My older cue is "springy" and zippy with the reaction on the cueball. I know I ramble on! This older cue had a MW Supertip on it. Coincidence?

Old cue: 18.5oz, slimmer, more "butt heavy", MW supertip.

Spare cue: slightly thicker shaft, 19.3oz, balance point 16-17", blue diamond tip ( two hour's play ).

This spare cue feels "hollow" in a way. Apologies for my description, this is proving harder to put into words than I thought it would.

    Anyone else with similar experiences?

Obviously there's nothing wrong with the TW. It will all be down to me and how I use it. Maybe I'm just too set in my ways with what I'm used to and as you told me, maybe I just don't know my specs after all!

IMO if you just went with run of the mill std specs and (guessed) hoped for the best when you placed your order you'll be damn lucky if it feels spot on first time bud.

You never know until you get the bute in your hands though really. Not long now surely?..

OK. This is the specs of all cues.

            JP slim: 18.5oz, 25mm butt, 57.5", 16.5" balance point, 9.4mm.

Spare: 19.3oz, 28mm butt, 57.5", 16" balance point, 9.4mm. The weight on this cue feels more evenly distributed, where as the JP it seem the majority of the weight is in the butt.

TW: 19oz, 27.5mm butt, 57.5, standard balance point ( left up to Trevor ), 9.4mm tip.

IDK. That BD tip didn't make it between posts

                  That it is bud.

I do hope all is good with the new cue bud, (i know how worried you are).

If my next cue don't feel 'right' i'm gonna have to get hotpot to order me a cue, all neil's cues i have tried i can play a treat with and take to them straight away......lol.

I hope you have better luck than me inoffthered. I've yet to have over a 70 break with my trev. Couple of weeks back I was playing rubbish so I got my old glover out and within half hour I hit a 94. Both cues are same length the trev is half an ounce heavier at 18 and its about 1mm or 2 mm bigger at the butt end at 30mm. Its the butt that I'm struggling with I think, it feels different and is causing me to hang onto it if you know what I mean. But I love it, its so much nicer than my glover. being new its silky smooth. Good luck anyway mate. I'm sure you will be fine with it.

The simple test is rip the BD of and put a MW on the spare cue, see how u get on.

If you love the JP so much, why u messing around with other cues, just use the JP permanently.

The one thing with the JP is, I lack on power shots due to the thinness of the butt. I decided to change, but yes... like you said, if I can't get on with another cue I will stick with that JP. I'll have to live with the trade off lacking on certain power shots, for being comfortable on other shots.

question: why pay several hundred pounds to a cue maker and then tell them how to make cues? people get very hung up on the numbers in reality a good cue maker knows what makes a cue play well.
