I've ordered a 15oz cue from ADR which should be with me shortly but before I started this thread I ordered a couple of butt extensions (6" & 11") to be made for my current cue that fit onto the shaft of my 3/4 cue (which has 16" butt) for the times when there is restricted space which some pubs have.

I tested the 11" butt yesterday and today and I played fantastic!! I weighed the cue with this short butt and it's 14oz (compared to 17oz) and although it now only measures 51" total the feel with touch shots amazes and now have much more control of the cue ball!

It's a touch short for me but I think I may now prefer an even shorter cue for UK Pool, perhaps 53" may be perfect so might order up another butt at 13" and ensure the weight is similar or perhaps an ounce heavier at most.

I will wait to try out ADR's cue and will get it trimmed down I think and if I like it perhaps will keep it as a spare cue (suspect no demand for a 53" cue)

Will keep you all updated. Thanks again for all who have helped
I am playing with one of ADR's Cue Craft pool cues, I must say that I am very happy with it and it along with some practise and a friend who is giving me some much needed coaching has helped improve my game. These cues are great value for someone on a budget and I am sure you will be happy when it arrives.

Now there's an idea. Could you tell me what happened to the balance point of your cue when using the 11"? And by extension do you mean basically a spare butt that's shorter?

The balance point is now 15.5" with the 11" butt compared to 17" with the 16" butt. Yes I mean spare butt which replaces the original.

        I weighed the individual parts

        Shaft 7.6 oz
        16" Butt 9.5 oz
        11" Butt 6.3 oz

Another thing to note using the short 11" butt is that I now hold the butt at the very end with my little finger hanging off the end supporting the base of the butt which I'm finding extremely comfortable.

As it's a quick release joint I can easily just put on the original 16" butt for times when I need the extra reach.

Sounds really good. Did the cuemaker need your cue to do this, or did you supply measurements?

I used to play mainly with cues weighting between 15-17 oz and always thought that this is the weight range that suited me the most. Recently I purchased, not knowingly, a 20oz cue and I am playing better than I have ever played. Cue does not feel 20oz it feels more like 18oz, when held, but its definitely 20oz.

Could this be due to the cue being well balanced - I not really sure? All i know is that I have found a cue that really suits me and my cue action. Basically what I found is that you do not have to have a lighter or heavier cue to control the cue ball better is just find the right one.

ive had the same thing happen to me lately always used a cue between 17-18oz , finished making one last month wasnt able to weight more than 15 3/4oz thought about putting a smaller tip for pool on it as its so light but changed my mind at the last moment (can always go smaller) its turned out bloody lovely to use ive been playing some of my most consistent snooker ever just goes to show whatever feels right to the man holding it !!

Yep I think it is for that reason. To be honest my Unclevit cue feels the same and control with it is terrific, but my cueing action is better with a lighter and shorter cue. It makes a big difference on long screw shots where I need to accelerate through the white more.

In truth I asked for the 2 short butts to be made without exact measurements, diameter wise, where it connected to the shaft as I was more concerned with the diameter (28mm) of where I held the cue butt. Did not supply the cue as it's the one I use and also a long way to send to Thailand.

The fitment is not perfect and not flush where it meets the shaft. This was not a concern, especially at the time as these were only going to be used for the odd shots where there was no room!

I have a few competitive pool matches the next 3 days and although I've been playing well the 2 times I've played with the short butt I think I will revert to the 16" butt for the matches as I'm in 2 minds if the length is just a little too short even though the touch shots have improved. Will see how it goes.

Right, so length was the priority. Mine's from Thailand too and I was hoping that sending just the butt to copy would allow them to make it flush. It's a bit of a leap in the dark though.

Yes length was the only concern after playing in a few pubs where I just couldn't get my cue in when on the cushion and had to resort to using a mini cheapo cue or using my shaft only without butt.

The thought of using this method to make a shorter lighter cue to replace the existing butt was not on my mind, hence why I purchased another cue to try.

As long as you are OK with not being able to use your cue then by all means send it off. I personally would have used some digital calipers to measure the butt diameter and ask them to make it to that size but I guess there is less guarantee that it will be perfect.

You need at least 10 posts to PM (as well as other features).
