  • 14" vs. 16" butt joint

    Hey ya,

Browsing the Mastercue website, I see their standard-length 3/4 joint is 14" from the end of the butt, although they also make 16" joint cues. I know 16" to be more standard.

Which, in your eyes, is ideal?

    Cheers.

You are not going to like this, but I prefer the joint at 12".You have a longer length of shaft if you have to remove the butt for a shot on a "tight pub table". also I believe longer 3/4 shafts play better.I seem to re-call MW being of a similar viewpoint with regard to playability of longer shafts. His MW Black Sharks are just such a compromise (if I remember rightly). If you use a mini-butt with a Black Shark shaft you get a playing length of something like 51".I am sure Mike will correct me if I am wrong.Very early JP 3/4 and early Craftsman were jointed at 12" and in modern cues I believe Peradon also joint at 12".Hope this helps.

Cheers Jonny. I ran a search first, I swear! But for '14 16 butt' and variations. Danke for the link.

old school: you weren't wrong - your thoughts are appreciated but won't help me decide too well!

Between 14" and 16", is there a clear preference? Any others' thoughts?

Hi Calogero1... I think Mastercue is a good choice. They make good cues at fair prices. I believe they can customise the position of the butt joint but it's best if you can verify with them if they still do that.

Although I've not played with a cue jointed at 14", I've played with 1 piece, 16" and middle joint cues before. Imo, as long as the cue is well balanced, the joint position should not affect the "playability" of the cue. It's probably a matter of personal preference where you want the joint to be at, be it for practical or aesthetic reasons.

          Cheers...

I have noticed looking at a selection of Mastercues at Green Baize that the 14" split 3/4 cues are the ones with just one decorative splice (cheaper) and the ones with 4 or more decorative splicing are split at 16".

I personally think the reason for having a 3/4 cue is one of convenience over a 1pc and one split at 16" will allow for you to have a slightly shorter case if that was important to you. I personally doubt you will notice that much difference in feel unless you are ultra sensitive in which case you wouldn't compromise and get a 1pc instead.

One advantage/disadvantage depends what you want is that a joint at 16" will probably have a more forward balance point that an equivelent cue at 14" although i think it will be marginal.

I would personally recommend that you can go to a good Mastercue retailer like Green Baize and Stu Green will allow you to try them all out as he has a great selection of cues (200+) and you can make a decision more on the way a cue feels as even cues made from the same cue maker to the same spec can feel very different.
