what is the best way to strip laquer off the shaft?
what is the best way to strip laquer off the shaft?
Iv bought an old 1 piece maple powerglide statesman cue and it has laquer on the shaft, i would really like to remove it but dont want to ruin the cue.
so what is the best way? cheers
I have done that on a cheap 50 pound cue from peradon and i am very happy with the result. Please note i am not in any way experienced in cue building whatsoever. I can give you some clues but you will do it on your own responsibility.
In my case it was ash shaft which i consider way more dificult to work with than maple.
With ash you need grain filling while with maple you should be ok without.(if you need expaining i can write my own experience which gave me glass like surface)
Start with around 600 sand paper do not put to much pressure let it work and change when clogged. Work it along the shaft and try to sand it off evenly. Then get some 1000g 1200 1500 2000 (ebay )and just work your way up to finish it smooth. If you scratch the brass polish with 0000 grade wire wool and can also sand with >2000g sandpaper, leather, etc. After all this raw linseed oil once a week applied very thinly leave for up to two days to dry and buff with paper or cloth repeat for several weeks. Do not appy to often or too much so it will not get sticky. Every now and then clean with damp cloth and buff dry. Every couple of month can do the oil as well. Not sure about something, ask
Hope it helps.
Back in the 60s I had a maple cue and decided to "clean" it up, gave it a good rubbing down with fine wire wool then a few coats of sanding sealer, rubbing with fine wire wool between coats, worked a treat. But you could give Craftsman a call on 0113 2865744 I'm sure
they'll give you some good advice. Good luck.
People say I disagree a lot, but I don't think I do.

With maple it's easy. I've done it with a fairly fine grade sand paper, about 600 grade I think to remove the laquer then I used two finer grades, about 800 and 1000. Starting with a fine grade like 600 means that you might need to use more paper as it loads up with dust quickly but I think that's better for the shaft.
