  • Full Exotic Wood butt...possible?

Just a quick one, is it possible to have a full Thuya Burr butt? No ebony, just goes from ash to Burr?

To confirm the length of it would be where the ebony normally ends in a ''normal'' cue. Not just after a short splice near the end.

Im sure i could have explained that better but hopefully you get what i mean...

I am not sure on this. From what I understand, burr woods are traditionally very dense and heavy, so could substitute for ebony on that count, but I don't know as it is available in long enough spindles to allow for a full splicing. The longest lengths normally available are up to 12", which wouldn't be long enough. Plus, do you not think this would look a little sickly and tacky? I personally think a single burr wood splicing looks brilliant (like a cannon match cue or camkin), but 4 lower splices of burr wood look like overkill and cheapen the look of the cue. (just my opinion, don't shoot me for it!)

Mike, Trevor, or another cue maker will be able to advise better.
If you want to play the pink, but you're hampered by the red, you could always try to play the brown!

Im not sure tacky would be the word i would choose, ive never seen anything like it though. Perhaps there is a reason for that??!!

I suppose if length of the wood is a problem you could use burr as the ebony splices, then just splice more burr onto that. Not sure how that would look mind.

That would probably be the way to do it. Splice 4 lumps of burr onto the shaft, then splice another 4, then another 4 etc to achieve a normal length butt. Alternatively, make it as a 3/4 cue, splice the 4 at the top as normal, then turn a 2" x 2" x 12" spindle into a but, and have a low joined cue might work, save having to do 8 splices....

I just think these exotic woods look better as secondary splices instead of main ones. I think that the more expensive the wood is, the more gaudy it looks when more is used. To me, the butt is Ebony or Rosewood. If you are having a burr wood, it should be a single splice. Even Snakewood (which I have on my cue) I'm still 50/50 on if it looks too much as it is 4 secondary splices. I am just tipped towards it not being overkill, but only due to how dark it is so doesn't overpower. This is just my opinion though. Some people will think it looks brilliant, and that is theirs.

Length of wood will be the problem.

Theres also a snakewood butt on coutts cues.

I think it would probably look better on a maple shaft.

I disagree with dean1982, I think some of these full butt wood looks class, I am not even a fan of snakewood but a full butt looks good.

              Cocobolo is lovely.

Have you contacted any of the cue makers to see if they can source it?

I was just seeing if it was possible first before getting quotes. Seems it is if it can be done in Snakewood (also lovely).

It's a £500 + cue with extensions im sure so will sort the reddies first. Probably go to Glover Cues to get it made as and when the time comes as ive seen his work and cant fault it.

I'll see what ADR has also first as specs are more impotant than looks and could save myself a packet.

Its possible providing the cue maker has the wood. You would be paying to have such a specific cue made so it could turn out expensive. Good luck any road

For on one piece cue, I believe splices are usually 19", so the 18" would be slightly shorter, but a workable option. You would however require 4 of these spindles to splice for the butt, so at $84 each, that is $336, just for the butt, no labour or other costs included.
The alternative is to buy 2 of these spindles, cut and use one for the top splices, and have the cue done as a 3/4 as I mentioned. Turn the other 18" spindle for the butt, and it reduces the price. probably can be done if you are prepared to pay enough for it!
