Robert does not make as much money as you think . The reason he decided to go down the wholesale route was that he was struggling to make a living by taking individual orders . He said to me that ' If someone ordered a cue from him at say 57 1/2 and he planes it down to the correct length , it may be the case that the top chevron would be partly lost in the Ferrule . So he did not want to put his name to a cue like that , as he has a reputation to uphold . He would then re-make the cue .So now he can make the cues to whatever length suits the particular grain of the cue .
As a one man band he can only turn out so many cues at anyone time . I seem to recall he said about 40 every 4 months . Now if he only takes individual orders , you could probably halve that with all the emails he was receiving from customers making the smallest of changes . Therefore he was struggling to make a living . He was spending 2 days a week trying to deal with all the emails . So his stance is somewhat forced upon him .
Everytime i go to see Robert i always hassle him to make me a cue but to no avail . He is a really top bloke and he makes you so welcome . Even lets my son throw the Snooker Balls around and doesn't care ! Always asks me to bring my son when i get my tip changed , Which i will be doing this Saturday . And yes , i will hassle him again to make me a blackplate .

God some ppl are so serious. lol lets not forget were talking about cues here hardly brain surgery. As for the person you may or may not be referring to about the origin of said product. I to have heard rumours but they are just rumours and I have no evidence to back them up so will not be repeating them. I find it funny that we have uk cue makers selling cues to china and china cue makers selling cue's to the uk allegedly.

I've got my own rice fields on the hills of the Shire and am exporting it to the far east, in return I get sent a whole batch of highly crafted bits of wood for some strange folks who like to waste away in no longer smoke filled halls rather than see the light of day to purchase, now so long as they're happy with what they've got for the price they paid then so what? let's face it we all pay way over the odds for way too many things that were made for a fraction of what we bought them for.

I made a point in earlier posts that custom cues are under-priced and that UK customers are expecting to be served like professional players for not a lot of money e.g. 700 or 800 quid. Why can't Robert market to those with the propensity to pay top dollar e.g. 5k+ which would make the economic returns justifiable for the time and effort involved? I can say with certainty that there is a huge potential market for that kind of offering (let's say limited edition cues 5 per year, hand made by Robert himself) in China. In fact, I'm fairly certain prices would go ballistic.
